SKN | Tether Co-Founder: Stablecoins Have Already Won as Bitcoin Volatility Reinforces Their Role

Stablecoins have moved beyond their origins as a cryptocurrency trading tool to become a core component of the global financial system, according to Reeve Collins, co-founder of Tether. Speaking as institutional adoption accelerates, Collins argues that the ongoing volatility in Bitcoin and other digital assets has reinforced, rather than weakened, the value proposition of fiat-backed digital currencies.

His remarks come at a pivotal moment for the cryptocurrency industry as traditional financial institutions, fintech firms, and sovereign governments expand their blockchain initiatives. The convergence of digital finance and regulated payment infrastructure is increasingly positioning stablecoins as one of the sector’s most practical and widely adopted innovations.

From Crypto Experiment to Financial Infrastructure

Collins helped launch Tether (USDT) during a period when many in traditional finance questioned whether stablecoins could achieve mainstream relevance. More than a decade later, he believes that debate has effectively ended.

Now serving as the incoming Chairman of ReserveOne and co-founder of STBL and WeFi, Collins points to the growing participation of established financial institutions as evidence that stablecoins have evolved into critical financial infrastructure. Organizations including JPMorgan, PayPal, and several sovereign governments are now developing or issuing their own stablecoins, reflecting a structural shift in the way digital payments and settlement are being modernized.

“If anything, it is the strongest validation the industry could ask for,” Collins said in an exclusive interview, adding that “Stablecoins are no longer an experiment. They are becoming a core layer of financial infrastructure.”

Bitcoin’s Volatility Highlights Stablecoin Utility

Rather than viewing Bitcoin’s price volatility as a weakness for the digital asset industry, Collins believes it reinforces the importance of stablecoins. While cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin continue to function primarily as investment assets and stores of value, stablecoins provide a reliable medium of exchange that enables users to remain within blockchain ecosystems without assuming significant market risk.

For institutional investors, this distinction has become increasingly valuable. Stablecoins facilitate real-time settlement, cross-border payments, decentralized finance participation, and digital treasury management while maintaining price stability through their fiat currency backing.

This complementary relationship allows investors to move efficiently between volatile digital assets and stable on-chain liquidity without exiting blockchain-based financial networks.

Institutional Adoption Is Reshaping Digital Finance

The rapid expansion of stablecoin adoption reflects broader institutional trends toward tokenization, digital asset custody, and programmable financial infrastructure. Financial institutions increasingly view blockchain technology as a means of improving payment efficiency, reducing settlement times, and lowering transaction costs.

For professional investors, stablecoin ecosystems are now evaluated using metrics that extend beyond market capitalization. Factors such as reserve transparency, regulatory compliance, issuer credibility, blockchain interoperability, and transaction volume have become increasingly important indicators of long-term sustainability.

Collins believes the industry’s transformation illustrates how blockchain innovation has matured from speculative experimentation into practical financial applications capable of supporting institutional-scale activity.

Looking ahead, the next stage of stablecoin development will likely be shaped by regulatory clarity, broader banking participation, and continued integration into global payment systems. While cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin may continue to experience periods of significant price volatility, stablecoins appear increasingly positioned to serve as the transactional foundation connecting traditional finance with the rapidly evolving digital asset economy.
