SKN | Boltz Suspends Bitcoin Swap Service Amid Surge in AI-Assisted Cyberattacks

Key Points

  • Boltz has suspended its non-custodial Bitcoin swap service after experiencing a sharp increase in AI-assisted hacking attempts.
  • The company said attackers are discovering and adapting exploits faster than its development team can identify and fix vulnerabilities.
  • Boltz emphasized that no user funds have been at risk, as its atomic swap protocol is fully non-custodial.
  • The incident highlights growing cybersecurity challenges facing open-source crypto infrastructure as AI accelerates the sophistication of cyberattacks.

Non-custodial Bitcoin swap protocol Boltz has temporarily suspended its services following a sustained wave of increasingly sophisticated cyberattacks that the company believes are being accelerated by artificial intelligence.

In a statement posted on X, the company said it decided to disable swaps after months of dealing with repeated exploits targeting its infrastructure.

According to Boltz, recent internal security reviews showed that the threat environment had intensified to the point where safely operating the service was no longer possible until additional protections are deployed.

The company said the operational pause will remain in effect until further notice.

AI Accelerates Security Threats

Boltz said it has observed a steady increase in automated AI-assisted probing throughout the year.

According to the company, attackers are now identifying vulnerabilities and adapting their techniques more quickly than its relatively small development team can respond.

Boltz explained that while previous security incidents were successfully contained, the pace and sophistication of recent attacks have fundamentally changed the security landscape for open-source Bitcoin infrastructure.

The company added that several well-resourced threat groups appear to be actively targeting its systems while developers work to implement security improvements.

Industry Faces New Cybersecurity Challenges

The incident reflects broader concerns across the cryptocurrency industry regarding the growing role of artificial intelligence in offensive cybersecurity.

Earlier this year, Solana Foundation Chief Information Security Officer Michael Coates warned that AI is changing the balance between attackers and defenders.

According to Coates, traditional manual security practices are becoming increasingly difficult to scale against machine-speed attacks, making automated defensive systems increasingly necessary.

Other cryptocurrency platforms have reported similar experiences.

Bitcoin-powered AI platform PayPerQ said it has also faced repeated exploit attempts in recent months, many of which it believes may involve AI-assisted attack techniques.

User Funds Remain Protected

Despite suspending its services, Boltz emphasized that customer assets have not been compromised.

The protocol uses non-custodial atomic swaps, allowing users to exchange Bitcoin and Bitcoin-based assets across networks such as the Lightning Network and Liquid Network without surrendering control of their private keys.

Because users retain ownership of their funds throughout the swap process, the company said no customer assets have been placed at risk during the attacks.

According to DefiLlama, Boltz currently holds approximately $180,860 in total value locked.

Refund Services Continue

Although swap functionality has been disabled, Boltz confirmed that essential services remain operational.

Its API will continue processing refunds, while customer support will remain available to assist users during the suspension.

The company cautioned that restoring swap services could take time, describing the situation as part of a broader shift affecting Bitcoin services built on open-source software.

Boltz said the changing threat environment requires careful evaluation before operations can safely resume.

Outlook

Boltz’s decision to suspend operations illustrates how artificial intelligence is reshaping cybersecurity across the cryptocurrency industry. As attackers increasingly automate vulnerability discovery and exploit development, smaller blockchain projects may face growing pressure to strengthen security through automation, continuous monitoring and more rigorous defensive infrastructure. The incident also underscores the resilience of non-custodial architectures, which can help protect user assets even when service providers face operational security challenges.
