SKN | MUFG PoC to Bring Japanese Government Bond Repo Transactions Onchain

Key Points:

•  MUFG and three affiliated companies are preparing a proof of concept to bring Japanese government bond repo transactions onchain through the Canton Network.
• The initiative aims to automate the transaction lifecycle, enable real-time intraday settlement around the clock and improve funding, capital and operational efficiency.
• The project is part of Japan’s Financial Services Agency Payment Innovation Project, which encourages financial institutions and fintech companies to test blockchain, stablecoin, tokenization and onchain settlement technologies.

MUFG Tests Onchain JGB Repo Transactions

Four companies within the Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group are collaborating on a new proof of concept designed to move Japanese government bond repo transactions onto blockchain infrastructure.

The participating companies are MUFG, Mitsubishi UFJ Morgan Stanley Securities, Mitsubishi UFJ Trust and Banking, and MUFG Bank. They will work with Digital Asset Holdings and Progmat on the initiative.

The project will use the Canton Network to explore how distributed ledger technology can support the settlement and operational processes associated with Japanese government bond repurchase transactions.

Focus on 24/7 Settlement

The companies said the PoC is intended to improve operational efficiency by automating the transaction lifecycle.

One of the central objectives is to enable real-time intraday settlement 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Traditional financial market settlement processes can involve multiple operational steps and established settlement windows. By moving parts of the repo transaction lifecycle onchain, MUFG and its partners are exploring whether automation and continuous settlement can reduce operational friction.

The initiative also aims to improve funding and capital efficiency.

Japan Encourages Blockchain Financial Experiments

The PoC forms part of the Payment Innovation Project pilot announced by Japan’s Financial Services Agency in February 2026.

The project is designed to help fintech companies and financial institutions conduct proof-of-concept projects involving advanced payment technologies.

The initiative covers technologies including blockchain-based payment solutions, stablecoins, tokenization and onchain settlement.

MUFG’s JGB repo experiment therefore fits within a broader Japanese effort to assess how emerging digital financial infrastructure can be applied to established financial markets.

MUFG Expands Its Blockchain Strategy

The latest project builds on MUFG’s broader involvement in blockchain and digital asset infrastructure.

In June 2023, MUFG announced that its Progmat Coin stablecoin issuance platform would be used by banks to issue Japanese yen-pegged stablecoins across multiple public blockchains.

The initiative positioned Progmat as part of MUFG’s broader strategy for developing blockchain-based financial infrastructure.

MUFG previously discontinued its GO-Net Japan blockchain payments project in February 2022 as the financial group shifted its focus toward stablecoin initiatives.

Repo Markets Move Toward Tokenization

Bringing Japanese government bond repo transactions onchain could provide a practical test of how tokenization and distributed ledger technology can be integrated into institutional financial markets.

Rather than focusing exclusively on cryptocurrency trading, the project applies blockchain infrastructure to a conventional financial product involving government securities and short-term funding.

If the PoC demonstrates meaningful improvements in settlement speed, automation and capital efficiency, similar infrastructure could potentially be applied to other institutional financial transactions.

Closing Insights

MUFG’s latest proof of concept highlights the growing convergence between traditional financial markets and blockchain infrastructure. By testing Japanese government bond repo transactions on the Canton Network, MUFG and its partners are examining whether onchain settlement can provide continuous availability, greater automation and improved capital efficiency. The project also demonstrates Japan’s broader effort to evaluate blockchain, tokenization and stablecoin technologies within regulated financial markets, potentially creating a foundation for wider institutional adoption of onchain settlement infrastructure.
