Bitcoin developers have taken another step toward addressing the network’s long-term exposure to quantum computing with the publication of a Bitcoin Improvement Proposal for SHRINCS, a hash-based post-quantum signature scheme. The proposal is significant because quantum-resistant cryptography could eventually become necessary to protect funds secured by today’s elliptic-curve signatures, but the transition introduces a difficult balance between security, transaction capacity and wallet complexity.

SHRINCS Targets Bitcoin’s Quantum Risk

Bitcoin currently relies on ECDSA and Schnorr signatures, cryptographic systems that could theoretically be compromised by sufficiently capable quantum computers. SHRINCS takes a different approach, relying on SHA-256-based hash functions rather than elliptic-curve mathematics. The proposal targets 128-bit classical security and 64-bit quantum security, broadly corresponding to the first NIST post-quantum security category.

The attraction is efficiency. Conventional post-quantum signatures can consume several kilobytes of transaction data, placing significant pressure on Bitcoin’s limited block space. SHRINCS is designed around Bitcoin’s specific constraints, with stateful signatures ranging from 548 bytes to 4,619 bytes depending on configuration. Under optimized conditions, the scheme can achieve signatures around 324 bytes, materially reducing the potential capacity penalty associated with post-quantum protection.

The Tradeoff Is Stateful Wallet Management

The smaller signature footprint comes with a critical operational requirement: state management. SHRINCS signers must track which signing states have already been used, because accidentally reusing the same state can compromise security. This creates additional requirements for hardware wallets, institutional custody systems, backups and multi-device environments.

The proposal includes a stateless fallback for situations in which signing state is unavailable, such as recovery from a static backup. The cost, however, is substantially larger signatures. The current design specifies a stateless signature of about 5,777 bytes, compared with the much smaller stateful path. For Bitcoin users, that means recovery procedures could impose considerably greater transaction costs and block-space consumption.

Capacity and Adoption Remain Key Questions

The difference in signature size could have material consequences at network scale. Blockstream estimates that a Bitcoin block filled with conventional 64-byte Schnorr signatures can accommodate roughly 4,200 transactions under a representative configuration, while a 324-byte SHRINCS signature could reduce that figure to approximately 1,750. A standardized post-quantum signature measuring around 2,420 bytes could reduce capacity to roughly 84 transactions under the same assumptions.

For institutional investors, the issue is therefore broader than quantum security itself. Custodians would need reliable state synchronization, recovery mechanisms and operational controls before migrating significant Bitcoin holdings to a stateful signature system. The proposal is still a draft, and its security proof remains incomplete, meaning technical validation will be a major milestone before serious consensus discussions can advance.

Strategic Outlook for Bitcoin’s Quantum Transition

SHRINCS demonstrates that Bitcoin’s quantum-resistance problem can potentially be addressed without accepting the full block-space costs of larger post-quantum schemes. However, the tradeoff between compact signatures and more demanding key management means adoption will depend as much on wallet engineering and operational resilience as on cryptographic performance. With the threat timeline for large-scale quantum computing uncertain, Bitcoin’s developers have time to evaluate competing approaches, but the publication of a formal BIP signals that preparation for a post-quantum migration is moving from theoretical discussion toward structured technical development.
