SKN | Zcash Outpaces Hyperliquid in August as Scarcity and ETF Access Drive ZEC Higher

Key Points:

  • Zcash (ZEC) gained approximately 70% in August, reaching an eight-year high of $888 and outperforming Hyperliquid’s roughly 50% monthly advance.
  • The launch of Grayscale’s ZCSH, described as the first U.S. spot Zcash ETF, added a new institutional access channel to the ZEC market.
  • Hyperliquid (HYPE) continued to show stronger year-to-date performance, rising more than 219% compared with ZEC’s approximately 58.5% gain.

Zcash and Hyperliquid emerged as two of August’s strongest-performing major crypto assets, but their rallies were driven by fundamentally different investment narratives. ZEC surged around 70% during the month to an eight-year high of $888, while HYPE gained approximately 50% and reached a record high of $86.71, reflecting strong demand for both scarcity-based monetary assets and revenue-generating crypto protocols.

The divergence matters for sophisticated investors because the two tokens represent different approaches to value creation. Zcash is increasingly being evaluated through the lens of fixed supply, privacy and monetary scarcity, while Hyperliquid’s investment case is tied more directly to protocol activity, revenue and mechanisms that direct economic value back toward the HYPE token.

Zcash Rally Gains Support From ETF Access and Scarcity

ZEC’s approximately 70% August advance coincided with the arrival of a new regulated investment vehicle. Grayscale’s ZCSH began trading on NYSE Arca on Tuesday, converting a trust structure that the firm had operated as a private placement since October 2017.

The development gave investors another route to gain exposure to Zcash and helped shift attention toward the asset’s broader monetary characteristics. Zcash has a fixed maximum supply of 21 million coins, placing it structurally closer to Bitcoin’s scarcity model than many newer digital assets with more flexible token issuance schedules.

Gemini CEO Tyler Winklevoss highlighted that supply constraint during the rally, arguing that the number of millionaires globally exceeds the number of whole ZEC units available under the network’s 21 million cap. The argument reflects the growing importance of scarcity narratives in a crypto market increasingly focused on identifying assets with clearer monetary properties.

Privacy and Technology Add Another Layer to ZEC’s Case

Zcash’s investment thesis is not based solely on limited supply. Its privacy technology, cybersecurity development and cross-chain potential have also become central to discussions surrounding its long-term relevance.

Grayscale argued that Zcash could potentially become a more serious competitor to Bitcoin because privacy-preserving technology may become increasingly valuable as digital systems expand and artificial intelligence plays a larger role in financial and online activity.

The August rally also followed a difficult period for the network. In June, ZEC fell approximately 57% in a single day after developers identified a soundness bug involving the network’s Orchard shielded pool. The subsequent recovery demonstrates how quickly crypto markets can reprice an asset when technical concerns ease and a new institutional narrative emerges.

Hyperliquid’s Rally Is Built on Revenue and Regulatory Expectations

Hyperliquid’s approximately 50% August gain was driven by a different set of catalysts. HYPE benefited from regulatory developments and changes to how the protocol manages revenue generated through its ecosystem.

The token rallied earlier in the month after President Donald Trump said CFTC Chair Mike Selig was working to bring Hyperliquid into the United States in a fully compliant and legal fashion. The comments strengthened expectations that the protocol could gain broader access to the U.S. market under an evolving regulatory framework.

Hyperliquid also activated its Aligned Quote Asset v2 framework, which reportedly directs around 90% of the cost-adjusted yield generated from USDC reserves toward the protocol’s Assistance Fund. That fund purchases HYPE on the open market, creating a mechanism that links platform economics more directly to token demand.

Circle is expected to act as the technical deployer and Coinbase as the treasury deployer, with each staking 500,000 HYPE. Revenue is recognized in 30-day cycles, with the first payment scheduled for October 3.

Two Different Narratives Are Competing for Crypto Capital

Despite Zcash’s stronger August performance, the year-to-date picture remains significantly different. HYPE has gained more than 219% year to date, compared with approximately 58.5% for ZEC.

That contrast illustrates the competing narratives currently attracting capital across the crypto market. Zcash represents a monetary-asset thesis built around scarcity and privacy, while Hyperliquid represents a protocol-driven model where revenue and ecosystem growth can potentially influence token economics.

Going forward, investors will be watching whether Zcash can sustain institutional interest following the ETF launch and whether Hyperliquid’s revenue-allocation framework produces measurable demand for HYPE. The August rally showed that crypto capital is not moving behind a single narrative: the market is increasingly rewarding both scarce monetary assets and protocols capable of demonstrating durable economic activity.
