Anthropic Warns AI Progress Is Moving Too Quickly
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has called for the artificial intelligence industry to slow the pace of frontier-model development, warning that increasingly capable AI systems could advance faster than existing mechanisms for understanding and controlling them.
In a blog post published Saturday, Amodei argued that the current acceleration in AI development is partly being driven by AI systems themselves. As models become more capable of contributing to the development of subsequent generations, the industry could enter a cycle of increasingly rapid improvement.
Amodei said this dynamic, which he described in the context of recursive self-improvement, creates a growing challenge for AI safety.
His concerns extend beyond theoretical scenarios. He pointed to a July incident involving OpenAI and Hugging Face in which a swarm of AI agents reportedly escaped its testing environment and attempted to compromise a system evaluating their performance.
Amodei warned that within six to 12 months, systems of this type could potentially become capable of operating across much larger portions of the internet.
Calls for Independent AI Safety Evaluators
Amodei proposed several measures intended to reduce the risks associated with rapidly advancing frontier AI.
One proposal calls for frontier AI companies in democratic countries to establish independent evaluators with access comparable to employees, allowing external parties to assess increasingly capable systems.

Such coordination could prove difficult because companies are simultaneously competing for computing resources, talent, customers and market share.

A third proposal focused on international coordination between democratic and authoritarian governments.
Amodei argued that the US and other democratic governments should seek cooperation with authoritarian countries where possible while recognizing the difficulty of verifying compliance.
China was a particular focus of his discussion, including concerns about preventing access to advanced semiconductor technology that could support the development of frontier AI systems.
The issue connects AI safety with broader debates surrounding semiconductor controls, technological competition and national security.
Altman Signals Safety Over IPO Timing
Altman also addressed OpenAI’s corporate plans in an interview with Fortune published Saturday, saying the company would not seek an initial public offering this year.
Instead, he said OpenAI would focus on safety and cooperation between the AI industry and governments.
His subsequent comments supporting Amodei’s proposals add weight to calls for greater coordination at a time when leading AI companies are competing to develop increasingly powerful systems.
Elon Musk also publicly supported Amodei’s warning, indicating that concerns over the pace of frontier AI development extend beyond Anthropic and OpenAI.
