Key Points:

  • The Federal Reserve raised its benchmark interest-rate range by 25 basis points to 3.75%-4.00%, marking its first rate increase since July 2023.
  • The decision reinforces a more restrictive macro backdrop for crypto, with persistent inflation and elevated Treasury yields increasing the opportunity cost of holding higher-volatility assets.
  • The Fed’s projections point to another rate increase before the end of 2026, making future policy guidance more important for Bitcoin, Ethereum and institutional crypto flows than the widely anticipated hike itself.

Fed Restarts Tightening Cycle as Inflation Remains Elevated

The Federal Reserve raised interest rates by 25 basis points on September 16, taking the federal funds target range to 3.75%-4.00% in the first increase since July 2023. The widely anticipated decision marks a significant shift for cryptocurrency markets because the policy move comes after a period in which investors had increasingly focused on the prospect of easier monetary conditions and renewed institutional demand for digital assets.

The Federal Open Market Committee said economic activity was expanding at a solid pace, while inflation remains elevated. The Fed also cited resilient domestic spending, strong productivity growth and robust capital investment, suggesting that policymakers see sufficient economic strength to prioritize price stability despite uncertainty surrounding geopolitical developments.

Bitcoin Remains Under Pressure as Rates Stay Restrictive

Bitcoin was trading around $75,800 after falling roughly 4% during the previous session, when the Senate failed to advance the CLARITY Act. Ethereum was near $2,400, while broader cryptocurrency capitalization had recently declined toward $2.6 trillion. The immediate market reaction to the Fed decision was relatively contained because traders had already assigned a high probability to the quarter-point increase.

That pricing matters because financial markets often react more strongly to unexpected changes in policy expectations than to an anticipated decision. For crypto, the more important transmission channel is the cost of liquidity. Higher policy rates can strengthen the appeal of interest-bearing traditional assets while increasing the financing cost associated with speculative positions.

Fed Projections Point to Another Hike in 2026

The Federal Reserve’s updated projections provide a more consequential signal for digital assets. Sixteen of 18 policymakers indicated they expect at least one additional rate increase before the end of 2026. The projections also showed the federal funds rate remaining elevated through 2027, with reductions not expected to begin until later in the forecast horizon.

Inflation forecasts were also revised higher. The Fed now projects 2026 PCE inflation at 3.7%, compared with 3.6% in its June projection, while the longer-term objective remains 2%. Persistent energy-price pressure linked to geopolitical disruptions has complicated the inflation outlook and could keep monetary policy restrictive for longer than crypto investors had previously anticipated.

Bond Yields and the Dollar Add to Crypto’s Macro Challenge

The rate decision is occurring alongside elevated bond-market yields. The U.S. 10-year Treasury yield reached 5% during Wednesday’s trading, while the dollar index rose about 0.3% following the Fed decision. Higher yields and a firmer dollar can tighten global financial conditions, creating an additional headwind for assets whose valuations are sensitive to liquidity.

Crypto’s response also needs to be viewed against the previous day’s regulatory shock. The failed CLARITY Act vote had already triggered broad selling, including a reported $450 million of Bitcoin ETF outflows on September 15. The combination of weaker institutional flows, regulatory uncertainty and tighter monetary policy leaves Bitcoin and major altcoins more dependent on fresh demand to stabilize market conditions.

What Crypto Investors Are Watching Next

The next focus will shift from the rate increase itself to inflation data, Treasury yields, ETF flows and the Fed’s subsequent policy signals. If inflation remains elevated, another tightening step could keep liquidity conditions restrictive. Conversely, evidence that price pressures are easing would change expectations for the policy path. For crypto markets, the interaction between institutional demand and the evolving interest-rate environment will remain central to the next phase of price discovery.
