Key Points
- Republican Senator John Curtis of Utah asked the Senate Judiciary Committee to investigate whether presidential family relationships have been used for private financial benefit, preferential treatment or access.
- Curtis called for subpoenas of Donald Trump Jr. and Hunter Biden, citing their business dealings, foreign relationships, gifts and connections to the presidencies of their fathers.
- The request comes as scrutiny of President Donald Trump’s family crypto interests remains part of the broader debate over ethics provisions in US digital-asset legislation.
A Republican senator is calling for a congressional investigation into the business dealings of Donald Trump Jr. and Hunter Biden, placing presidential family finances and potential conflicts of interest back at the center of Washington’s debate over ethics and access to political power.
Senator John Curtis of Utah sent a letter to Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley and Ranking Member Dick Durbin requesting an investigation into whether relationships with presidents have been used to obtain private financial benefits, preferential treatment or access from domestic and foreign interests. He also asked the committee to subpoena both Trump Jr. and Hunter Biden.
Curtis Seeks Investigation Into Both Presidential Families
Curtis framed the request as a bipartisan examination rather than an inquiry focused exclusively on the Trump family. His letter asks the Judiciary Committee to examine the business dealings, relationships with foreign individuals and entities, gifts and other benefits received by both presidential sons.
The senator also wants investigators to examine circumstances in which either individual’s relationship to the presidency was invoked or understood to provide financial or other value.
Reuters reported that Curtis’s request represents an unusual break with President Trump among Republican lawmakers, while emphasizing that the proposed investigation covers the families of presidents from both major parties.
Trump Jr.’s Crypto and Prediction-Market Ties
Curtis specifically cited Donald Trump Jr.’s involvement in family-backed cryptocurrency ventures, along with his advisory relationships with prediction-market platforms operating within an area overseen by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission.
The senator also referenced a reported wedding-related gift involving Russian businessman Umar Kremlev. According to Curtis’s letter, the broader issue is whether relationships between members of a presidential family and foreign business figures could create expectations of favorable treatment or access.
Trump Jr. and his wife have described the payment as a generous wedding gift, while President Trump said last week that his son had repaid Kremlev, according to the source material.
The request therefore does not establish that any law was violated. Curtis explicitly described the purpose of the proposed inquiry as establishing the facts and determining whether existing ethics, disclosure or anti-corruption laws apply.
Hunter Biden Included in the Proposed Probe
Curtis also called for scrutiny of Hunter Biden’s business relationships with foreign entities and circumstances in which his connection to his father, former President Joe Biden, may have been invoked or understood to provide value.
Hunter Biden has previously denied involving his father in his business dealings. Curtis’s proposal would place the business activities of both presidential sons under the same congressional framework rather than limiting the inquiry to one political family.
The senator said the broader objective would be to identify whether existing laws are sufficient and whether additional reforms are needed concerning financial relationships involving presidential families.
Crypto Ethics Remain Part of the Senate Debate
The investigation request arrives shortly after the Senate failed to advance the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act on September 15. The legislation had undergone extensive negotiations and included new ethics provisions addressing digital-asset activities by public officials and their families.
Republican lawmakers said the revised legislation incorporated substantial changes sought by Democrats, including ethics provisions.
Democratic senators, however, said the provisions did not go far enough. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand and other Democrats said after the vote that they remained committed to passing crypto legislation while seeking stronger ethics provisions.
The disagreement has made presidential crypto interests one of the issues surrounding the stalled legislation. Democratic senators have argued that stronger restrictions are necessary, while Republican lawmakers have pointed to the ethics language included in the revised bill. These are competing political positions rather than established findings of wrongdoing.
Outlook
Curtis’s request could broaden congressional scrutiny of presidential family business relationships beyond the current debate surrounding Trump’s crypto ventures. Whether the Senate Judiciary Committee takes up the investigation, issues subpoenas or conducts hearings remains to be determined. If pursued, the proposed inquiry would examine documented business relationships and potential application of existing ethics and anti-corruption rules across both Democratic and Republican presidential families.
