SKN | Zcash Gains First European ETP as US ETF Demand Fuels Institutional Access

Key Takeaways

  • 21Shares has launched Europe’s first physically backed Zcash ETP on Euronext Paris and Amsterdam, expanding regulated access to ZEC.
  • The European launch follows Grayscale’s US Zcash ETF, which surpassed $500 million in assets within two weeks of its August debut.
  • ZEC has entered a period of exceptional volatility, with its price rising more than 10% in 24 hours and trading volume approaching $2 billion.

Zcash is gaining a new institutional access point in Europe after 21Shares launched the region’s first exchange-traded product tracking ZEC. The move follows the August launch of Grayscale’s US spot Zcash ETF and comes as renewed demand for privacy-focused digital assets pushes ZEC sharply higher, placing regulated investment products at the center of the latest crypto market rotation.

European ETP Extends Zcash Market Access

The 21Shares Zcash ETP began trading on September 21 on Euronext Paris and Euronext Amsterdam under the ticker ZCASH. The physically backed product carries a 2.50% annual fee and had an initial net asset value of $20.04 per unit, with 5,000 securities outstanding at launch.

The structure gives investors exposure to ZEC through conventional brokerage infrastructure rather than requiring direct custody of the cryptocurrency. That distinction is relevant for professional investors whose mandates, operational controls or custody arrangements can make direct crypto ownership more complicated.

US ETF Sets a Larger Institutional Benchmark

The European product follows Grayscale’s Zcash ETF, which began trading on NYSE Arca on August 25. By September 8, the fund had surpassed $500 million in assets under management, while options trading on the ETF also began, adding another layer of institutional risk-management and trading functionality.

The US product’s rapid asset accumulation provides an important benchmark for the European market. It indicates that regulated exchange-traded structures can attract substantial capital toward a privacy-focused asset, although the European ETP initially launched at a considerably smaller scale.

ZEC Rally Raises Liquidity and Volatility Questions

Zcash has experienced an unusually sharp repricing alongside the expansion of exchange-traded access. Market data showed ZEC closing around $1,630 on September 22 after gaining 10.79% during the session, with reported daily trading volume exceeding 300,000 ZEC on major spot markets.

Other market data placed ZEC around $1,600 on September 23, with market capitalization above $27 billion and 24-hour trading volume near $1.8 billion. The scale of the move highlights both growing liquidity and elevated volatility. For institutional participants, deeper exchange-traded access can improve portfolio integration, but sharp price movements also increase execution, liquidity and risk-management considerations.

Strategic Outlook for Privacy-Focused Assets

The significance of the European launch extends beyond Zcash itself. With regulated products now available in both the US and Europe, ZEC is moving further into conventional investment infrastructure at a time when financial privacy is becoming a distinct institutional market theme. The next test will be whether European ETP assets build steadily rather than merely follow the recent price surge, while investors will closely monitor product flows, spreads, liquidity and regulatory treatment of privacy-oriented cryptocurrencies.
