The SEC’s October 2 order approved Cboe BZX’s proposal covering six 3x products, including Bitcoin and Ether, although trading in each fund remains subject to its registration becoming effective.

IBIT Moves Into Golden Cross Territory

The proposal was initially filed on August 10 and published for public comment in August. The SEC said it received no comments on the proposal before approving the rule change.

The Bitcoin and Ether products are particularly relevant because leveraged exchange-traded exposure can amplify daily movements in the underlying assets. A 3x product is therefore structurally different from a conventional spot Bitcoin or Ether ETF and can produce substantially different returns over periods longer than a single trading session because of daily resetting and compounding effects.

The regulatory approval expands the range of crypto-linked instruments available through US exchange infrastructure, but the SEC order does not mean all six products can immediately begin trading. Each fund must first have its registration become effective.

Leverage Adds a New Layer of Market Sensitivity

The arrival of 3x Bitcoin and Ether products could increase the sensitivity of exchange-traded markets to short-term price movements. For professional investors, this creates a different risk profile from holding unleveraged spot exposure, particularly during periods of elevated volatility.

Bitcoin and Ether already experience larger daily price fluctuations than many traditional asset classes. Leveraged products can magnify those movements, making liquidity, spreads, volatility, and daily performance especially important considerations for market participants.
