Meanwhile, a Bermuda-based life insurer operating entirely in Bitcoin, has raised $37.5 million from existing investors as demand grows for insurance products designed around digital-asset wealth and inheritance planning.
The funding round was led by Bain Capital Crypto, with participation from Haun Ventures, Framework Ventures, Pantera Capital, Apollo, Northwestern Mutual Future Ventures and Morgan Creek Digital. The company, whose backers include OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, said its total funding has now exceeded $180 million.
Announced Thursday, the latest financing follows increased international demand for Meanwhile’s Bitcoin life insurance policies, particularly across Asia, Europe and the Middle East, according to the company.
Bitcoin Life Insurance Targets Wealth Transfer
Meanwhile is positioning its insurance products around a challenge facing Bitcoin holders: transferring digital-asset wealth to beneficiaries through regulated financial arrangements.
Company co-founder and CEO Zac Townsend said wealthy families already hold Bitcoin but have lacked regulated options for passing those holdings to the next generation. He added that brokers had approached the company as clients increasingly requested Bitcoin-denominated life insurance.
Unlike conventional policies primarily denominated in fiat currencies, Meanwhile’s products are designed to operate entirely in Bitcoin. This structure allows the insurance benefit and associated policy obligations to be denominated in the digital asset, according to the company.
The model targets clients seeking to incorporate Bitcoin into longer-term financial and estate-planning strategies rather than treating the asset solely as an investment holding.
New Products Expand International Reach
In early 2026, Meanwhile introduced BTC Life 1-Pay, a single-premium whole life insurance policy designed for high-net-worth clients outside the United States.
The product represents the company’s second major offering, following BTC 10-Pay, which is designed for US taxpayers.
Policies can be owned by individuals, trusts or companies, giving clients different structures through which to organize ownership and succession planning.
The ability to incorporate trusts and corporate entities may be particularly relevant to families managing substantial digital-asset holdings across generations. However, the suitability of any structure depends on applicable insurance, tax and inheritance rules in the relevant jurisdiction.
Underwriting Income Signals Business Expansion
Meanwhile said its net long-term underwriting income had already exceeded the previous year’s total and was on track to more than double in 2026. The company did not disclose precise figures.
The reported growth provides an indication of expanding insurance activity, although the absence of detailed financial disclosures limits the ability to independently assess profitability, underwriting performance or the scale of the business.
Meanwhile’s funding also reflects broader interest in financial products designed to address risks associated with cryptocurrency ownership, including inheritance, custody and recovery following theft.
In a separate development reported in June, global insurance broker and risk advisory company WTW acquired crypto insurance platform Redefind and launched a digital-asset protection service covering expenses associated with forensic investigations, asset tracing and legal recovery following theft or loss.
Redefind uses cryptographic proof of ownership to verify insured assets, according to the company. Its approach addresses a different part of the market from life insurance, illustrating how insurance services are expanding around the needs of cryptocurrency holders.
Outlook
Meanwhile’s latest funding round highlights growing investor interest in insurance products built around Bitcoin-denominated wealth and long-term succession planning. International demand, new policy structures and reported underwriting growth could support further expansion, particularly among high-net-worth families seeking to transfer digital assets to beneficiaries. The company’s longer-term prospects will depend on sustained demand, underwriting discipline and its ability to operate within the insurance and estate-planning requirements of multiple jurisdictions.
