Key Points

  • Solana has recorded no reported mainnet outages in two years, according to a report from Fidelity’s Center for Applied Technology.
  • Strong staking participation, validator incentives, low latency and inexpensive transactions support the network’s resilience and ability to operate at scale.
  • Concentration among validator identities and operators, alongside hosting and client software dependencies, remains an area requiring continued monitoring.

Solana has made substantial progress in network reliability and performance, according to a report from Fidelity’s Center for Applied Technology (FCAT). The assessment highlights improvements in resilience, economic security and transaction efficiency while cautioning that certain concentrations within the network’s infrastructure could still create vulnerabilities.

The report found that Solana had experienced no reported mainnet outages over the preceding two years. However, it identified potential risks involving stake distribution, hosting infrastructure and client software, emphasizing that continued reliability depends on more than transaction speed and network availability.

The findings offer a mixed assessment of one of the cryptocurrency sector’s major layer-1 blockchains: Solana has strengthened its operational performance, but questions surrounding decentralization and infrastructure dependencies remain relevant to its long-term resilience.

Staking and Validator Incentives Support Network Security

Fidelity’s report identified substantial staking participation and incentives tied to validator performance as important components of Solana’s economic security.

Staking helps secure proof-of-stake networks by requiring participants to commit tokens in support of network operations. Validator incentives can encourage reliable participation, while a broad and resilient validator ecosystem can help maintain consensus and transaction processing.

However, the report cautioned that the distribution of stake warrants continued observation. Concentration among a relatively small number of validator identities and operators could create vulnerabilities if significant portions of the network depend on a limited set of participants.

This distinction is important because a blockchain can maintain strong uptime while still facing structural risks. Operational reliability demonstrates that a network has been functioning consistently, but it does not by itself establish that the network is sufficiently decentralized to withstand every potential disruption.

Performance Improvements Strengthen Solana’s Position

The report also highlighted Solana’s low latency, expanded capacity and inexpensive transactions as advantages supporting practical use at scale.

These characteristics are important for applications that require frequent transactions and rapid confirmation, including decentralized finance, digital asset trading and other blockchain-based services. Lower transaction costs can also make smaller transactions more practical for users and developers.

Solana has continued to pursue improvements to transaction timing. On August 21, the network reduced its slot time to 350 milliseconds, according to the information provided by the report’s coverage. The change marked the first slot-time reduction since the network’s inception, according to Jacob Creech, the Solana Foundation’s vice president of technology.

Slot time refers to the interval associated with producing successive slots in the blockchain. Reducing it can support faster transaction processing, although the benefits depend on how the network performs under real operating conditions.

In June, the Solana Foundation outlined plans to reduce slot times further, targeting 200 milliseconds. The proposal included three additional reductions of 50 milliseconds each.

The planned changes are intended to improve latency and accelerate confirmations. However, the proposed target should be distinguished from an achieved network milestone: the supplied information does not establish that Solana has already reached the 200-millisecond target.

Hosting and Client Software Remain Areas to Monitor

Beyond staking concentration, Fidelity identified hosting arrangements and client software as additional areas relevant to Solana’s resilience.

Blockchain networks depend on the infrastructure used by validators to participate in consensus and process transactions. If too many operators rely on a limited number of hosting providers or share critical technical dependencies, a disruption affecting those systems could have a wider impact than an isolated validator failure.

Client software diversity is also relevant because widespread dependence on a particular implementation can increase the potential consequences of software defects or compatibility problems. The report’s emphasis on these factors indicates that resilience must be assessed across the network’s broader technical and operational environment.

The available findings do not quantify the likelihood of an outage arising from these concentrations or establish that a specific vulnerability has been exploited. Instead, they identify areas where ongoing monitoring remains important despite the network’s recent record of availability.

Outlook

Fidelity’s assessment presents Solana as a network that has made meaningful progress in reliability, economic security and performance. Its reported two-year period without mainnet outages is a positive operational indicator, while continued reductions in slot time could further improve responsiveness if implemented successfully. Nevertheless, stake concentration, hosting dependencies and client software remain important considerations for assessing long-term resilience. Solana’s ability to maintain its performance while addressing these structural risks will be central to its continued development.
