SKN | SEC Approves 3x Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs: How Leverage Could Magnify Investor Losses

Key Points:

  • The SEC approved the listing of Volatility Shares’ proposed 3x Bitcoin and 3x Ether ETFs on October 2, 2026, although a separate registration step remained outstanding in the source report.
  • Daily leverage can amplify short-term gains but also produce losses when prices fluctuate, even if Bitcoin or Ethereum ultimately returns to its starting level.
  • The proposed Bitcoin fund carries a stated annual management fee of 1.85%, while the prospectuses estimate annual returns of 1.98% for Bitcoin and 2.78% for Ether are needed to break even.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s approval of exchange listings for Volatility Shares’ proposed 3x Bitcoin and 3x Ether exchange-traded funds marks another development in the expansion of leveraged cryptocurrency products. Designed to deliver approximately three times the daily price movements of their respective underlying assets, the funds could appeal to traders seeking amplified short-term exposure. However, their structure introduces compounding effects and additional costs that can make longer-term performance diverge sharply from the returns of Bitcoin and Ethereum themselves.

How Daily Leverage Can Magnify Gains and Losses

According to The Motley Fool, both proposed funds use futures contracts and reset their exposure daily to maintain their targeted leverage. This mechanism is central to their design, but it also creates a potential source of performance erosion when the underlying cryptocurrency experiences volatile price movements.

For example, if Bitcoin or Ethereum rises 10% in one day, a fund targeting three times the daily return would be expected to gain approximately 30%, before fees and other tracking effects. The outcome can look attractive during a strong upward move. However, the relationship becomes less favorable when prices reverse.

If a cryptocurrency gains 10% and then falls approximately 9.1%, it returns to roughly its original price. A spot holder would therefore have little or no net gain before costs. A daily-reset leveraged fund, by contrast, would suffer a loss because the second day’s leveraged decline applies to a larger fund value following the initial gain. The Motley Fool cites the fund prospectus as illustrating a loss of approximately 5.5% in this scenario.

This effect means that three times the daily return does not equal three times the long-term return. The final outcome depends on the path prices take, not merely where they begin and end.

Existing Fund Performance Highlights the Risks

The article points to the performance of the Volatility Shares 2x Bitcoin ETF as an example of how leverage can magnify losses over time. The fund reportedly lost 61.9% in the 12 months ending October 21, 2026, while Bitcoin declined 25.1% over the same period.

The comparison illustrates how daily leverage and volatile price movements can cause a fund’s performance to deteriorate more sharply than that of the underlying cryptocurrency. Although the proposed 3x products are structured differently in their targeted exposure, the same general compounding risk applies, and the greater leverage can increase sensitivity to adverse daily moves.

Investors must also account for fund expenses. The Bitcoin fund’s prospectus lists an annual management fee of 1.85%. The source reports estimated annual returns of 1.98% for the Bitcoin fund and 2.78% for the Ether fund as necessary to break even. These figures underline that the underlying assets must generate sufficient returns to offset the costs and mechanics of the products.

Why These ETFs May Not Suit Long-Term Investors

Leveraged cryptocurrency ETFs are generally more complex than conventional spot-exposure products. Their daily reset makes them particularly sensitive to volatility, and a sharp decline can erase a substantial portion of accumulated gains. Even during a market that eventually moves higher, repeated reversals can leave a leveraged fund trailing the performance investors might expect from its stated leverage multiple.

The Motley Fool argues that these products are not primarily designed for average investors to purchase and hold over extended periods. Instead, they may be more relevant to hedge funds and institutional traders using them as part of short-term strategies involving multiple assets, derivatives, and hedges. Their suitability depends on an investor’s objectives, understanding of leverage, risk tolerance, and ability to monitor positions actively.

As the proposed funds move toward a potential launch, investors will need to distinguish the SEC’s approval of exchange listing from the remaining registration process described in the report. The actual trading start date, final fund documentation, expenses, and performance under different market conditions will be important developments to monitor. The central issue is not simply whether Bitcoin or Ethereum rises, but whether the daily path of those prices allows a leveraged product to retain its value after compounding effects and costs.
