JPMorgan Upgrades Coinbase (COIN) to Overweight, Cites $34B Opportunity in Potential Base Token

JPMorgan has upgraded Coinbase (COIN) to “overweight” from “neutral,” issuing a significantly bullish outlook based on new, high-value monetization opportunities, chief among them the potential “equitization” of its Base Layer 2 blockchain. The bank raised its December 2026 price target on the crypto exchange’s stock to $404 from $342, sparking a 4% rise in early trading.

The “Base” Case: A Multi-Billion Dollar Catalyst

The core of JPMorgan’s upgraded thesis rests on the massive, untapped value of Coinbase’s proprietary Layer 2 network, Base. Launched in August 2023, Base has rapidly become one of the largest L2 ecosystems. Analysts noted that Coinbase is now exploring the launch of a native token for the network, a move that would directly capture a significant portion of the blockchain’s economic growth.

JPMorgan’s model projects a potential market capitalization for a Base token between $12 billion and $34 billion. This equitization, they estimate, could in turn accrue $4 billion to $12 billion in direct value to Coinbase’s balance sheet. The bank’s new $404 price target is valued at 50 times projected 2027 earnings and explicitly factors in $4 billion from this potential token.

Monetization and Market Stabilization

Beyond the L2 catalyst, JPMorgan highlighted a second key driver: enhanced monetization of the USDC stablecoin. Coinbase’s strategy to segment users, particularly through its Coinbase One subscription service which offers yields of 4% on USDC, is seen as a major earnings booster. The bank estimates this initiative alone could add approximately $1 per share in annual earnings.

This optimistic outlook comes as the competitive landscape shows signs of stabilizing. While the risk from decentralized exchanges (DEXs) remains, analysts noted that the market share between DEXs and centralized exchanges (CEXs) has steadied. JPMorgan’s view is that Coinbase’s fully integrated model—spanning brokerage, custody, market making, and an exchange—provides a durable and profitable structure, even in the face of potential future fee compression.

This upgrade from one of Wall Street’s largest banks signals a clear shift in sentiment, viewing Coinbase less as a simple, volatile exchange and more as an integrated financial ecosystem with significant, un-monetized platform value. The potential for a Base token is now a primary focus for investors, representing a catalyst that could fundamentally alter the company’s valuation and long-term earnings power.
