Nunchuck Wallet Brings Programmable Bitcoin to the Masses With Miniscript Support

Nunchuck Wallet has officially launched support for fully generalized Miniscript, marking a new era in programmable Bitcoin for everyday users. The update enables a level of flexibility and control previously accessible only to advanced developers, while maintaining safety and usability for a broader audience.

What Miniscript Brings to Bitcoin

Miniscript, developed by Core Bitcoin contributor Pieter Wuille, is a high-level policy language designed to simplify and secure the creation of custom Bitcoin scripts. By abstracting commonly used Bitcoin script primitives such as signature locks, timelocks, and hashlocks, Miniscript allows users to compose complex scripts with predictable outcomes.

Unlike traditional Bitcoin scripting, Miniscript is fully analyzable and composable, meaning users can verify that their custom logic will execute as intended, reducing the risk of errors that could lock or lose funds. For Nunchuck Wallet, integrating this language expands both the security and programmability of wallets in a user-friendly format.

Templates for Everyday Use

Nunchuck Wallet provides two foundational templates for users to get started. The first, decaying multisig, reduces the number of keys required to spend funds after a timelock expires, safeguarding against key loss. The second, expanding multisig, allows additional keys to participate in signing over time, enhancing flexibility for collaborative or evolving wallets.

For advanced users, Nunchuck supports fully custom Miniscript templates, enabling tailored script logic beyond the default options. These templates can be applied to both Native Segwit and Taproot wallets, broadening compatibility with modern Bitcoin features.

Hardware Wallet Compatibility

Out of the gate, Nunchuck Wallet supports the following devices:

  • Native Segwit Miniscript: Coldcard, Tapsigner, Blockstream Jade, and Ledger

  • Taproot Miniscript: Coldcard and Ledger

Currently, MuSig2 use with Miniscript is limited to software-only keys, though hardware integration may expand in future updates.

Collaboration and Security

Nunchuck Wallet’s end-to-end encrypted communication function also supports Miniscript templates, enabling secure collaboration between multiple participants when constructing or using template-based wallets. This is particularly valuable for institutional users, multi-signature setups, and coordinated fund management, where communication security is critical.

To aid adoption, Nunchuck has released a 101 Technical Guide for users wishing to explore Miniscript in depth, alongside references to Pieter Wuille’s official breakdown and toolset for hands-on experimentation.

Market Implications and User Adoption

Bitcoin (BTC) recently traded around $66,200, highlighting the growing institutional and retail interest in programmable and secure transaction mechanisms. Miniscript adoption could encourage broader use of advanced wallet setups, potentially reducing custodial reliance and enhancing self-sovereign finance practices.

Analysts suggest that as programmable Bitcoin becomes more accessible, investor behavior may shift toward increased use of multi-signature and conditional transactions. This could influence liquidity patterns, transaction volumes, and even protocol-level adoption of Taproot-enhanced features.

Looking Ahead

By combining Miniscript with a user-friendly interface and hardware wallet support, Nunchuck Wallet is poised to democratize programmable Bitcoin. As adoption spreads, the platform may redefine expectations around wallet security, collaborative fund management, and script-based automation. For both retail and institutional users, Miniscript could become a critical tool in navigating an increasingly complex Bitcoin ecosystem, offering greater control over funds while mitigating risk.
