SKN | Anchorpoint Takes Cautious Approach to Retail Hong Kong Dollar Stablecoin Launch

Key Points

  • Anchorpoint CEO Dominic Maffei declined to reaffirm an earlier indication that the venture could introduce its Hong Kong dollar-backed stablecoin to retail users by the end of 2026.
  • The Standard Chartered-backed venture launched its institutional stablecoin product in August.
  • HSBC launched its Hong Kong dollar-backed RedCoin stablecoin for users of its PayMe app, increasing competition in Hong Kong’s developing stablecoin market.

Anchorpoint Prioritizes Sustainable Stablecoin Expansion

Anchorpoint, a stablecoin venture backed by Standard Chartered, is taking a cautious approach to introducing its Hong Kong dollar-backed digital currency to retail users, leaving its previously indicated launch timeline uncertain.

According to the South China Morning Post, CEO Dominic Maffei declined to confirm at a Friday press conference whether the retail product would launch by the end of 2026, as previously indicated in the venture’s published frequently asked questions.

Maffei said the company intends to develop the market sustainably rather than accelerate the rollout to meet a specific date.

“We believe it’s important to build the market out in a long-term, sustainable manner,” Maffei said, adding that rushing a launch “does not make sense.”

The comments suggest that Anchorpoint is prioritizing its long-term market development strategy over an immediate expansion into retail payments. However, the company has not announced a replacement launch date, and the remarks do not establish that the previously indicated timeline has been formally abandoned.

Institutional Stablecoin Precedes Retail Offering

Anchorpoint released its institutional stablecoin product in August, establishing an initial offering before expanding toward individual consumers.

The venture previously indicated that a retail version could become available as early as the end of 2026. Maffei’s latest comments leave the timing open, with the company emphasizing a measured approach to market development.

The distinction between institutional and retail distribution is significant for stablecoin issuers. Institutional products can be developed around specific financial and business use cases, while retail offerings require broader distribution, accessible payment interfaces and the ability to serve a much larger user base.

Anchorpoint has not disclosed a revised timetable or provided additional details about the conditions that would determine when its retail product becomes available.

HSBC’s RedCoin Raises Competitive Pressure

Anchorpoint’s comments follow HSBC’s launch of RedCoin, a Hong Kong dollar-backed stablecoin made available on Friday to users of its PayMe application.

HSBC’s existing distribution network gives the launch access to approximately 3.3 million PayMe users, according to the source report. The rollout places a bank-backed digital currency directly within an established consumer payment service.

The development adds a competitive dimension to Hong Kong’s stablecoin market, where financial institutions and other businesses are exploring digital money for payments and related financial services.

However, the two offerings should not be assumed to have identical business models or target markets. Anchorpoint has already introduced an institutional product, while the reported RedCoin launch provides access through HSBC’s retail payment ecosystem.

For Anchorpoint, the challenge will be to establish its own use cases and distribution strategy while determining the appropriate pace for expanding beyond institutional customers.

Partnership Combines Banking and Web3 Expertise

Anchorpoint grew out of a partnership between Standard Chartered, Animoca Brands and telecommunications provider HKT, announced in February 2025. The companies had previously participated jointly in Hong Kong’s stablecoin issuer sandbox in July 2024.

The partners bring different capabilities to the venture. Standard Chartered contributes its banking background, while Animoca Brands brings blockchain expertise and connections across the Web3 industry. HKT is the telecommunications partner.

Animoca’s role includes helping develop applications for the stablecoin across the Web3 ecosystem. Those potential applications form part of the venture’s broader effort to establish a market for its Hong Kong dollar-backed digital currency.

The partnership combines established financial services with blockchain and telecommunications capabilities, although the long-term commercial impact will depend on adoption, available use cases and the venture’s ability to establish sustainable distribution.

Outlook

Anchorpoint’s retail launch remains without a confirmed date as the venture emphasizes sustainable development over speed. HSBC’s RedCoin rollout adds a competitor with an established consumer payment channel, increasing the importance of clear use cases and effective distribution. The next indicators to watch are whether Anchorpoint provides a revised retail timetable, expands institutional adoption and demonstrates practical demand for its stablecoin across payments and Web3 applications.
