Key Points:

  • Anthropic will provide its Claude AI models to organizations participating in the UK Financial Conduct Authority’s second Supercharged Sandbox cohort.
  • The regulator selected 21 organizations to test AI applications across payments, fraud detection, compliance and governance.
  • The FCA received 199 applications for the latest cohort, reflecting strong demand for regulated AI experimentation.
  • The initiative is part of the UK’s broader strategy to encourage responsible adoption of artificial intelligence in financial services.

Anthropic Partners With UK Financial Regulator

Artificial intelligence company Anthropic has joined the UK Financial Conduct Authority’s (FCA) Supercharged Sandbox, providing its Claude family of AI models to financial firms participating in the regulator’s second innovation cohort.

The collaboration enables selected organizations to develop and evaluate artificial intelligence solutions within a controlled regulatory environment before introducing them into live financial services.

The FCA created the Supercharged Sandbox to help firms experiment with emerging technologies while maintaining regulatory oversight and promoting responsible innovation.

Claude AI to Power Financial Applications

Participants in the second cohort will gain access to Anthropic’s AI tools, including Claude, Claude Code and Claude Cowork, to build and test a wide range of financial applications.

The technologies are expected to support projects involving agent-driven payments, fraud detection, regulatory compliance, governance automation and other AI-powered financial services.

By providing access to advanced language models, the sandbox aims to help firms explore practical uses for artificial intelligence while identifying operational and regulatory considerations before commercial deployment.

Demand for the Sandbox Continues to Grow

The FCA reported receiving 199 applications for the second Supercharged Sandbox cohort, representing a 51% increase compared with the inaugural program.

The regulator selected 21 organizations for participation, including Scottish Widows, Money Advice Trust and TrueLayer.

The increase in applications demonstrates growing interest among financial institutions and technology companies seeking regulated environments where they can safely develop and evaluate AI-driven products and services.

Expanding the UK’s AI Ecosystem

Anthropic joins a growing network of technology partners supporting the FCA’s artificial intelligence initiatives.

The Supercharged Sandbox already collaborates with NVIDIA, which provides computing infrastructure, and NayaOne, which supplies development environments and technical tools for participating firms.

Alongside the second cohort, the FCA has also launched a 10-week Agentic Academy in partnership with the Centre for Finance, Technology and Entrepreneurship to help organizations design, develop and deploy AI agents within financial services.

The educational initiative complements the sandbox by helping firms build expertise in implementing advanced AI systems responsibly.

Supporting Responsible AI Adoption

The Supercharged Sandbox focuses on companies that are still researching, designing and testing AI applications.

Organizations that successfully complete the experimentation phase may later participate in the FCA’s separate AI Live Testing program, which allows approved firms to deploy artificial intelligence solutions in live financial markets under regulatory supervision.

This phased approach enables companies to evaluate safety, governance and compliance issues before introducing AI-powered products to customers.

Outlook

Anthropic’s participation in the FCA’s Supercharged Sandbox reflects the growing collaboration between artificial intelligence developers, financial institutions and regulators. As demand for AI-powered financial services continues to increase, regulated testing programs are expected to play a critical role in ensuring innovative technologies can be deployed safely, transparently and in compliance with evolving financial regulations.
