SKN | Bitcoin Nears $70,000 as $1.14 Billion in Crypto Short Positions Are Liquidated

Bitcoin surged toward the $70,000 level on Wednesday as a powerful market rebound triggered a wave of forced liquidations across cryptocurrency derivatives markets. The rally pushed Bitcoin to an intraday high of $69,749, while approximately $1.14 billion in short positions were wiped out within one hour, highlighting the impact of leverage on digital-asset price movements.

The move comes as crypto markets respond to improving risk sentiment, renewed spot Bitcoin ETF inflows and expectations surrounding upcoming U.S. discussions on digital-asset regulation. While Bitcoin has recovered significantly from recent lows, investors remain focused on whether the rally represents a sustainable market shift or a leverage-driven rebound.

Bitcoin Recovery Accelerates as Short Squeeze Amplifies Gains

Bitcoin was recently trading near $68,689, representing a weekly gain of approximately 9.3%. The move extends a recovery that has lifted the asset roughly 19% from its recent swing low of $57,735, although Bitcoin remains significantly below its record high above $126,000 reached in October 2025.

The sharp move higher triggered a major short squeeze, a market event where traders betting on lower prices are forced to close losing positions. According to CoinGlass data, total cryptocurrency liquidations reached approximately $1.22 billion in one hour, with short positions accounting for $1.14 billion of that amount.

Bitcoin represented the largest share of the liquidation wave, with approximately $677.64 million in BTC positions closed. Ethereum followed with approximately $422.90 million, while Solana accounted for about $37.88 million.

The mechanics of leveraged markets can accelerate price movements in both directions. As short sellers are forced to buy back assets to close positions, the additional demand can push prices higher, triggering further liquidations and creating a self-reinforcing upward cycle.

Institutional Flows and Policy Developments Support Market Recovery

The latest Bitcoin rally also coincides with renewed attention toward institutional participation. Spot Bitcoin ETFs have returned to net positive flows after a period of outflows, suggesting that some investors are increasing exposure following recent market weakness.

Institutional activity remains a key factor in Bitcoin’s market structure. Unlike previous cycles driven primarily by retail speculation, the current market includes significant participation from asset managers, publicly traded companies and financial institutions through regulated investment products.

Macro conditions are also influencing investor positioning. Traders have reduced expectations of further Federal Reserve tightening, with prediction markets previously pricing the probability of a rate hike above 80% earlier in the year. Lower expectations for tighter monetary policy can improve sentiment toward risk assets, including cryptocurrencies.

The rally also arrives ahead of a White House meeting involving President Donald Trump, SEC Chair Paul Atkins, CFTC Chair Michael Selig and executives from Coinbase, Ripple and Kalshi to discuss potential crypto market-structure rules.

Investors Evaluate Whether Rally Can Extend Beyond Liquidations

While the liquidation event provided significant momentum, market participants are closely watching whether Bitcoin can maintain its strength after leveraged positions have been cleared. Short squeezes can generate rapid price increases, but sustainable rallies typically require continued demand from spot buyers and long-term investors.

Market sentiment has improved but remains cautious. Prediction markets tracking Bitcoin’s next move show divided expectations, with traders evaluating scenarios ranging from a move toward $84,000 to a potential decline toward $55,000.

The current environment reflects a broader transition period for Bitcoin. Supporters argue that the asset’s approximately 55% decline from its previous peak is smaller than historical bear-market drawdowns, while skeptics point to macro uncertainty and unresolved regulatory questions.

Looking ahead, Bitcoin’s ability to hold above key price levels, maintain ETF inflows and attract sustained institutional demand will determine whether the current rebound develops into a broader trend. Investors will continue monitoring U.S. regulatory discussions, Federal Reserve policy expectations and derivatives-market positioning as key drivers of the next major move.
