A volunteer cybersecurity initiative known as Bitcoin Red Team has reported discovering thousands of potential security vulnerabilities across the Bitcoin ecosystem during an intensive AI-assisted audit.

The team, composed of 16 volunteer security researchers, includes AnchorWatch CEO Rob Hamilton, Bitcoin developer Calle, and other contributors focused on improving the security of Bitcoin-related open-source software.

Using a combination of artificial intelligence tools and manual technical verification, the group has been scanning repositories for software weaknesses that could expose users or infrastructure to cyberattacks.

Thousands of Potential Vulnerabilities Identified

According to Bitcoin developer Calle, the project has produced significant findings within its first two days of operation.

During the first 29.8 hours, the team reviewed 390 Bitcoin-related projects and identified 4,962 potential security issues.

Among those findings, 720 were classified as high- or critical-severity vulnerabilities, while researchers successfully reproduced approximately 21.4% of the reported issues during verification.

Calle said the team’s current pace averages roughly one critical exploit identified per hour for each participating researcher, illustrating how artificial intelligence is accelerating vulnerability discovery.

Coldcard Incident Highlights Urgency

The security review began only days after the widely publicized Coldcard hardware wallet incident, which researchers estimate has resulted in the theft of more than $100 million worth of Bitcoin.

The Coldcard vulnerability renewed industry concerns about software security, firmware verification and cryptographic implementation across Bitcoin infrastructure.

Against that backdrop, Bitcoin Red Team said its work is intended to help developers identify weaknesses before attackers can exploit them.

AI Is Changing Security Research

The project reflects a broader shift in cybersecurity as artificial intelligence increasingly assists both security researchers and cybercriminals.

AI tools can rapidly analyze large codebases, identify programming flaws and generate exploit scenarios that previously required extensive manual review.

While these capabilities strengthen defensive security research, they also enable attackers to discover vulnerabilities at much greater speed.

The Bitcoin Red Team initiative aims to use those same technologies proactively to improve the resilience of Bitcoin’s open-source ecosystem.

Developers Face Growing Security Challenges

Calle acknowledged that many Bitcoin developers are already managing an increasing number of security concerns.

He noted that recent incidents have placed significant pressure on maintainers responsible for securing open-source software used throughout the Bitcoin ecosystem.

The team said it hopes its findings will help project maintainers prioritize critical fixes and strengthen the security of widely used Bitcoin applications.
