SKN | BlackRock’s IBIT Flashes a Golden Cross as SEC Clears Listing of 3x Bitcoin and Ether ETPs

Key Points:

  • BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF (IBIT) formed a technical golden cross as its 50-day moving average moved above its 200-day average.
  • The SEC approved Cboe BZX’s rule change allowing six 3x leveraged products, including Bitcoin and Ether ETPs from Volatility Shares’ VS Trust.
  • The developments expand the range of regulated exchange-traded crypto exposure while introducing products with substantially greater sensitivity to underlying asset movements.

BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF (IBIT) flashed a technical golden cross as US regulators approved a rule change permitting Cboe BZX to list triple-leveraged Bitcoin and Ether exchange-traded products. The combination of improving technical momentum and expanding regulated crypto-product access comes as institutional investors gain more ways to obtain exposure to digital assets through traditional market infrastructure.

The developments are significant because they involve two different aspects of the market: IBIT’s trading trend and the expansion of exchange-listed crypto products. The SEC’s October 2 order approved Cboe BZX’s proposal covering six 3x products, including Bitcoin and Ether, although trading in each fund remains subject to its registration becoming effective.

IBIT Moves Into Golden Cross Territory

According to Koyfin data cited in the source, IBIT’s 50-day simple moving average stood at 41.97, slightly above its 200-day average of 41.92. The crossover forms what technical analysts call a golden cross, a pattern commonly used to identify a shift in medium-term price momentum relative to a longer-term trend.

The margin between the two averages was only 0.05, meaning the signal was relatively narrow rather than a large separation between the moving averages. For institutional investors, that distinction matters because technical indicators can describe market momentum but do not independently establish whether a trend will persist.

IBIT has become an important channel for traditional-market investors seeking Bitcoin exposure through an exchange-traded structure. Its performance and trading activity therefore provide another reference point for assessing how institutional capital is interacting with the cryptocurrency market.

SEC Clears Six Triple-Leveraged Products

Separately, the SEC approved Cboe BZX’s proposed rule change on October 2 covering six 3x products from Volatility Shares’ VS Trust: 3x Gold, 3x Silver, 3x Bitcoin, 3x Ether, 3x Crude Oil, and 3x Natural Gas. The proposal was initially filed on August 10 and published for public comment in August. The SEC said it received no comments on the proposal before approving the rule change.

The Bitcoin and Ether products are particularly relevant because leveraged exchange-traded exposure can amplify daily movements in the underlying assets. A 3x product is therefore structurally different from a conventional spot Bitcoin or Ether ETF and can produce substantially different returns over periods longer than a single trading session because of daily resetting and compounding effects.

The regulatory approval expands the range of crypto-linked instruments available through US exchange infrastructure, but the SEC order does not mean all six products can immediately begin trading. Each fund must first have its registration become effective.

Leverage Adds a New Layer of Market Sensitivity

The arrival of 3x Bitcoin and Ether products could increase the sensitivity of exchange-traded markets to short-term price movements. For professional investors, this creates a different risk profile from holding unleveraged spot exposure, particularly during periods of elevated volatility.

Bitcoin and Ether already experience larger daily price fluctuations than many traditional asset classes. Leveraged products can magnify those movements, making liquidity, spreads, volatility, and daily performance especially important considerations for market participants.

What Investors Will Watch Next

The combination of IBIT’s golden cross and the SEC’s approval of the Cboe BZX listing framework marks another stage in the institutionalization of cryptocurrency markets. Investors will now watch whether IBIT’s moving-average crossover develops into a sustained trend and when the newly approved leveraged products become eligible to trade.

The broader significance lies in the continued expansion of regulated crypto-market infrastructure. As more exchange-traded products enter the market, investors will have greater structural choice—but also a wider range of risk profiles to evaluate as Bitcoin and Ether remain highly volatile underlying assets.
