Key Points

  • Block has joined the x402 Foundation and added Bitcoin Lightning support to the open payment protocol for autonomous AI-driven transactions.
  • x402 allows AI agents and web services to make payments automatically for API access, data and digital services.
  • Block joins Google, Microsoft, Amazon Web Services, Coinbase and the Solana Foundation in supporting the x402 ecosystem as companies develop infrastructure for agentic commerce.

Block is expanding its Bitcoin payments strategy into the emerging market for autonomous AI commerce, adding Bitcoin Lightning support to the x402 payment protocol as artificial intelligence agents increasingly gain the ability to transact on behalf of users and businesses.

The company announced Thursday that it has joined the x402 Foundation and is contributing Lightning functionality to the protocol. Block said Lightning is well suited to the low-cost, high-volume transactions expected to underpin agentic commerce.

The integration connects Bitcoin’s Lightning Network with an open payment standard designed specifically for machine-driven transactions, creating a potential pathway for AI agents to pay for digital services without requiring traditional human-led checkout processes.

Lightning Comes to x402

x402 is an open payment standard that enables AI agents and web services to autonomously pay for resources such as API access, data and digital services.

The protocol is designed around automated transactions between software systems. Rather than requiring an individual to authorize every payment, an AI agent can interact with a service, determine that payment is required and complete the transaction through the supported payment infrastructure.

Block said integrating Lightning into x402 is intended to support the type of frequent, relatively small-value transactions that could emerge as AI agents increasingly interact with online services.

Steve Lee, head of Block’s Bitcoin development initiative Spiral, said bringing Lightning to x402 is a step toward making Bitcoin usable as everyday money for people and the agents operating on their behalf.

Bitcoin Targets Machine-to-Machine Payments

The addition of Lightning gives x402 access to Bitcoin’s payment network through a layer designed to enable faster and lower-cost transactions than conventional onchain Bitcoin transfers.

For AI agents, transaction characteristics can become particularly important. Autonomous software could potentially make many payments for information, computing resources, APIs or other digital services, making transaction costs and settlement speed relevant to the overall economics of agentic commerce.

The x402 framework is therefore being developed around a model in which payments become part of the interaction between software systems rather than a separate step requiring a human to intervene.

Block’s involvement places Bitcoin Lightning within that emerging payment architecture.

Major Technology Companies Back x402

Block is joining a growing group of technology and crypto companies supporting the x402 Foundation.

Google, Microsoft and Amazon Web Services are among the technology companies backing the initiative, alongside crypto companies including Coinbase and the Solana Foundation.

The x402 Foundation was launched in April under the Linux Foundation as an effort to establish an open ecosystem around the payment standard.

The participation of companies operating across cloud computing, artificial intelligence, payments and blockchain infrastructure reflects the broader interest in enabling AI agents to transact across digital services.

Rather than building separate payment systems for individual AI applications, an open standard could provide a common framework through which agents interact with different service providers.

Block Expands Its AI Commerce Strategy

Block’s x402 initiative builds on its participation in the Universal Commerce Protocol, another effort focused on enabling AI-driven commerce for small businesses.

The broader strategy places payments at the intersection of two expanding areas: artificial intelligence and digital financial infrastructure.

As AI systems become capable of performing tasks independently, payment functionality becomes an important component of their ability to operate without continuous human intervention.

An agent that can search for information, access software tools or purchase digital resources may eventually need to make payments as part of completing those tasks. Protocols such as x402 are designed to provide the infrastructure for those interactions.

Open Standards Could Shape Agentic Commerce

The development also highlights the importance of interoperability as companies build AI-driven commerce systems.

If every AI agent or digital service required a separate payment mechanism, automated commerce could become fragmented across proprietary platforms. An open standard provides a potential common layer through which agents and services can exchange payments.

Block’s decision to contribute Lightning support gives the protocol another payment option while strengthening Bitcoin’s potential role in machine-to-machine commerce.

The extent to which these systems achieve meaningful adoption will depend on how widely developers, businesses and AI platforms integrate the standard.

Outlook

Block’s addition of Bitcoin Lightning to x402 places the cryptocurrency’s payment infrastructure within a broader effort to enable autonomous AI transactions. The combination of an open payment protocol and Lightning’s low-cost transaction capabilities could provide infrastructure for AI agents paying for digital services at scale.

With major technology and crypto companies already supporting the x402 Foundation, the development of standardized payment infrastructure for agentic commerce is becoming an increasingly important area of competition and experimentation across the technology and financial sectors.
