Key Points:

  • Coinbase reported third-quarter 2026 revenue of approximately $1.22 billion, lower than the previous year, while net income reached $718.7 million and diluted earnings per share from continuing operations stood at $2.51.
  • The company is expanding beyond traditional cryptocurrency trading through prediction markets, stablecoin partnerships, derivatives, and AI-focused infrastructure to diversify revenue sources.
  • RLUSD integration across Coinbase’s retail, exchange, and Prime platforms strengthens its stablecoin strategy, although regulatory scrutiny and weaker spot trading activity remain significant challenges.

Coinbase Global is facing an important test of its business diversification strategy as weaker revenue highlights the limitations of relying heavily on cryptocurrency trading activity. Its third-quarter 2026 results showed lower year-over-year revenue despite substantial reported net income, placing greater attention on whether newer business lines, including prediction markets and stablecoin services, can provide more consistent sources of growth.

Revenue Performance Highlights the Need for Diversification

Coinbase reported third-quarter revenue of US$1,215.58 million, below the level recorded a year earlier. Net income reached US$718.7 million, while diluted earnings per share from continuing operations were US$2.51.

The difference between revenue performance and profitability illustrates why investors need to examine more than the headline earnings figure. Coinbase’s business remains exposed to cryptocurrency market conditions, particularly trading activity and transaction fees. When market volatility and customer trading volumes weaken, transaction-related revenue can come under pressure even as the company continues expanding its broader platform.

The investment narrative is therefore increasingly centered on whether Coinbase can evolve from a trading venue into a diversified financial infrastructure provider. Its strategy includes prediction markets, derivatives, subscription products, stablecoin services, and other blockchain-based financial applications.

Prediction Markets and Stablecoins Expand Revenue Opportunities

One of Coinbase’s strategic priorities is developing revenue streams that are less directly dependent on spot cryptocurrency trading. Prediction markets represent one such opportunity, potentially broadening the company’s user engagement and creating additional activity across its platform.

Stablecoins are another important component. These digital assets can support payments, trading, collateral management, and other financial applications without requiring users to rely exclusively on traditional banking infrastructure. Coinbase’s stablecoin partnerships could therefore generate activity linked to transactions and asset balances rather than only buying and selling cryptocurrencies.

However, the expansion of these services introduces execution and regulatory challenges. Prediction markets and stablecoin products operate within evolving regulatory frameworks, and potential restrictions could affect their availability, commercial structure, or growth prospects. The ability to scale these businesses while maintaining regulatory compliance will be central to their long-term contribution.

RLUSD Integration Strengthens Coinbase’s Stablecoin Strategy

A particularly relevant development is Coinbase’s rollout of Ripple USD (RLUSD) across its retail, exchange, and Prime platforms. The integration expands access to the stablecoin across the XRP Ledger, Base, and Ethereum, with one-to-one conversion against U.S. dollars and other supported stablecoins.

The development connects Coinbase’s broader platform strategy with practical financial applications, including payments, collateral, and onchain finance. For institutional clients, support through Coinbase Prime is especially relevant because it extends stablecoin infrastructure into services designed for professional market participants.

Nevertheless, the commercial impact will depend on adoption, transaction activity, and the extent to which RLUSD becomes integrated into actual payment and financial workflows. Availability across multiple platforms creates opportunities, but does not automatically translate into material revenue growth.

Long-Term Forecast Depends on Successful Execution

Simply Wall St. presents a long-term forecast in which Coinbase could reach approximately US$9.1 billion in annual revenue by 2029, alongside projected earnings of US$1.7 billion. The estimates imply annual revenue growth of approximately 14.8% and a substantial improvement in earnings compared with the current earnings position described in the report.

These projections remain analyst expectations rather than guaranteed outcomes. The company’s ability to achieve them will depend on whether prediction markets, stablecoin services, derivatives, and subscription products can offset weaker spot trading revenue. Regulatory developments will also influence how quickly these businesses can expand.

Looking ahead, Coinbase’s next phase will be defined by the quality of its revenue mix rather than trading activity alone. Investors will be watching stablecoin adoption, prediction-market engagement, institutional platform growth, and the regulatory treatment of newer products. The central challenge is whether Coinbase can establish a more diversified and resilient business model while remaining exposed to the cyclical nature of the cryptocurrency market.
