SKN | Crypto Today: BTCPay Breach, CLARITY Act Vote and Bybit’s $1.5B Recovery Effort

BTCPay Server temporarily restricted public remote access to Lightning Network nodes after attackers exploited a critical vulnerability that exposed credentials and enabled them to move funds. In Washington, Senate Majority Leader John Thune filed a cloture motion on the CLARITY Act, setting up a procedural vote when lawmakers return in September and potentially reviving momentum for US crypto market structure legislation. Meanwhile, a US court granted Bybit expedited discovery as the exchange seeks to trace and recover assets stolen in the $1.5 billion North Korea-linked hack.

BTCPay Restricts Lightning Access After Attack

BTCPay Server temporarily restricted public remote connections to Lightning Network nodes running Lightning Network Daemon (LND) software after attackers exploited a critical vulnerability to obtain credentials and move funds.

The restriction prevents external wallets such as Zeus from connecting through BTCPay Server domains or Tor onion addresses on Docker deployments. BTCPay said Lightning payments can continue operating and that remote access will be restored once the project determines that it is safe.

BTCPay’s version 2.4.2 installs LND version 0.21.1 and automatically regenerates macaroon credentials on standard installations. The project has advised operators to review their nodes for unauthorized payments, unexpected channel closures, unfamiliar peers and discrepancies between onchain or Lightning balances.

The incident adds to a series of recent security concerns affecting Bitcoin infrastructure, following the Coldcard hardware-wallet vulnerability that has been linked to more than $100 million in confirmed losses. Neither incident compromised Bitcoin’s underlying protocol.

Senate Sets Up September CLARITY Act Vote

US Senate Majority Leader John Thune filed cloture on a motion to take up the CLARITY Act, setting the stage for a key procedural vote after lawmakers return from the August recess.

The Senate is expected to consider the measure in September. Cloture requires 60 votes, meaning Republican lawmakers will need Democratic support to clear the procedural hurdle.

The vote would not represent final passage of the CLARITY Act, nor would it guarantee that the legislation ultimately receives a final vote.

The development nevertheless revives momentum around one of the most closely watched pieces of US cryptocurrency legislation. The CLARITY Act seeks to establish a federal market structure for digital assets and clarify regulatory responsibilities between the Securities and Exchange Commission and Commodity Futures Trading Commission.

Negotiations have remained difficult, particularly over ethics provisions and rules concerning stablecoin rewards. Lawmakers have reportedly continued discussions over a bipartisan ethics proposal intended to address Democratic concerns surrounding President Donald Trump’s financial interests in the cryptocurrency sector.

Court Grants Bybit Expedited Discovery

A US federal court has granted Bybit expedited discovery as the cryptocurrency exchange attempts to trace assets stolen in a $1.5 billion hack linked to North Korea.

Court records unsealed Thursday show that Bybit filed a lawsuit under seal on June 18 against North Korea, its Reconnaissance General Bureau, the Lazarus Group and 20 unidentified defendants. The court granted Bybit’s request for expedited discovery the following day.

The discovery authority provides Bybit with a mechanism to identify alleged intermediaries and pursue assets that remain traceable after the attack.

Bybit alleged that some of the stolen funds reached cryptocurrency exchanges operating or maintaining infrastructure in the United States. The exchange is seeking account-holder identities, balances and transaction histories from relevant platforms.

The company said some of the platforms had indicated they would cooperate if provided with a court order.

Closing Insights

Today’s developments highlight three major forces shaping the cryptocurrency industry: infrastructure security, regulatory policy and asset recovery. The BTCPay incident demonstrates the continuing risks surrounding Bitcoin’s expanding software ecosystem, while the CLARITY Act’s scheduled procedural consideration could determine the direction of US digital asset regulation. At the same time, Bybit’s expedited discovery effort shows how blockchain transparency and traditional legal mechanisms are increasingly being combined to trace and potentially recover stolen cryptocurrency.
