Key Takeaways

  • SWI Group has raised €800 million, approximately $900 million, to expand AI computing and data-center infrastructure, including assets tied to former FTX investment Genesis Digital Assets.
  • Genesis previously operated 15 facilities with a combined 1.3 gigawatts of capacity, giving the business a substantial infrastructure base for its planned transition.
  • The shift reflects growing demand for AI computing, but conversion costs, customer contracts and power availability will determine whether the strategy delivers sustainable returns.

A Bitcoin-mining venture once backed by FTX is being repositioned for the artificial intelligence economy, illustrating how energy-intensive crypto infrastructure is finding new commercial uses. Investment group SWI Group has secured €800 million, around $900 million, to expand its data-center and AI computing operations across Europe and the United States as demand for computing capacity reshapes the economics of digital infrastructure.

From Bitcoin Mining to AI Computing

The business at the center of the transition is Genesis Digital Assets, a Bitcoin miner in which FTX’s affiliated trading firm, Alameda Research, acquired an approximately 20% stake before the exchange collapsed in November 2022. SWI announced a $500 million investment in Genesis in June 2026 and later increased its ownership to approximately 70%, renaming the business SWI Digital.

Genesis previously reported operating 15 facilities with a combined capacity of 1.3 gigawatts. That power footprint is a significant asset as AI developers compete for data-center space, electricity and computing infrastructure. However, electrical capacity alone does not establish how much computing power is available for AI workloads: specialized chips, cooling systems, networking equipment and facility upgrades may all be required.

Why AI Is Changing Mining Economics

Bitcoin mining facilities were designed to run specialized machines that validate transactions and secure the network. AI workloads, particularly large-scale model training and inference, require different hardware and data-center configurations. Nevertheless, existing sites can offer advantages through established power connections, land, cooling infrastructure and access to energy markets.

The capital raised by SWI is intended to support expansion in both Europe and the United States. The company’s strategy reflects a broader industry shift in which mining operators are assessing whether AI and high-performance computing can provide more predictable revenue than mining Bitcoin, whose profitability depends on token prices, network difficulty, block rewards and electricity costs.

For investors, the key distinction is between infrastructure potential and contracted revenue. Repurposing facilities can open new markets, but construction, equipment procurement and customer onboarding may delay returns.

FTX’s Legacy and the Ownership Transition

Alameda reportedly spent more than $1 billion acquiring its stake in Genesis between 2021 and 2022, making the investment part of the wider financial history examined after FTX’s collapse. SWI has said disputes related to FTX’s stake have been resolved, while its own investment has shifted control of the mining business.

The transition illustrates how assets associated with a failed crypto conglomerate can retain commercial value under new ownership. It does not, however, mean the AI expansion directly recovers funds for FTX creditors; that depends on the legal ownership and treatment of the relevant interests.

What Investors Should Watch Next

SWI’s ability to turn existing power capacity into operational AI data centers will be central to the strategy. Investors will be watching capital expenditure, facility-conversion timelines, customer agreements and actual utilization rates. The pivot reflects a changing market for computing infrastructure, but its financial success will depend on execution rather than the headline amount raised.
