Key Points

• Reform UK leader Nigel Farage reportedly accepted gifts from crypto-linked businessman George Cottrell before becoming a Member of Parliament.

• The reported benefits included staff, security, transportation and accommodation, according to The Sunday Times.

• Farage denies any wrongdoing, stating he complied with all applicable disclosure rules because the gifts were received before entering Parliament.

• The reports add to ongoing scrutiny over Farage’s relationships with cryptocurrency industry figures as he advocates pro-crypto policies in the UK.

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage is facing renewed scrutiny after The Sunday Times reported that he received a range of undeclared benefits from longtime adviser George Cottrell, a businessman with ties to the cryptocurrency industry and a previous US fraud conviction.

According to the report, Cottrell provided Farage with security personnel, transportation, accommodation and staffing support before Farage was elected as a Member of Parliament in July 2024. The reported assistance allegedly included former military personnel providing security, social media staff hired by Cottrell and access to a rented property near Buckingham Palace.

Farage rejected any suggestion of wrongdoing, saying he “followed the rules” because the support was provided before he entered Parliament. He also described the newspaper’s allegations as a politically motivated “hit job.”

Previous Legal Issues Surrounding Adviser

George Cottrell has remained a close adviser to Farage for more than a decade.

In 2016, Cottrell was arrested in the United States on multiple charges connected to an alleged money laundering scheme. He later pleaded guilty to a single wire fraud charge under a plea agreement and served approximately eight months in prison.

The report also noted Cottrell’s involvement with Tether.bet, an offshore gambling platform that reportedly uses the USDT stablecoin.

Crypto Ties Continue to Draw Political Attention

The latest allegations come as Farage is already facing questions over his connections to cryptocurrency investors.

A parliamentary standards inquiry remains open regarding whether Farage properly declared financial support connected to crypto billionaire Christopher Harborne. Farage has argued that the funding was intended for personal security before becoming an MP and therefore did not require parliamentary disclosure.

Separately, Labour MP Phil Brickell recently called for an investigation into whether Farage improperly lobbied the Bank of England over its central bank digital currency (CBDC) plans while receiving support from individuals with financial interests in private stablecoins.

Reform UK Continues Pro-Crypto Agenda

Farage has become one of the UK’s most prominent political supporters of digital assets.

Reform UK has proposed legislation aimed at making the United Kingdom a leading global cryptocurrency hub, while advocating lower capital gains taxes on crypto investments and the establishment of a national Bitcoin reserve.

The party also became the first major UK political party to accept political donations in Bitcoin, reinforcing its pro-crypto platform.

Outlook

The reports add to growing political scrutiny over the relationship between policymakers and the cryptocurrency industry as governments continue developing digital asset regulations. While Farage denies any misconduct and maintains he complied with disclosure requirements, the allegations may fuel further debate over transparency, lobbying and political donations linked to the rapidly evolving crypto sector.
