Key Points:

  • Polish Olympic Committee president Radosław Piesiewicz has been charged in an investigation linked to the collapse of cryptocurrency exchange Zondacrypto.
  • Prosecutors allege influence peddling and preferential treatment of creditors during insolvency proceedings.
  • The case adds to mounting scrutiny surrounding Zondacrypto, which halted trading in April after reporting problems accessing a wallet containing about 4,500 Bitcoin.

Polish prosecutors have charged Polish Olympic Committee president Radosław Piesiewicz in an investigation into collapsed cryptocurrency exchange Zondacrypto, expanding a probe that has already drawn scrutiny over missing customer funds and the exchange’s financial management.

Poland’s Justice Minister and Prosecutor General Waldemar Żurek said Thursday that authorities had detained Piesiewicz in connection with the investigation. Prosecutors subsequently announced charges under two provisions of Poland’s Penal Code involving alleged influence peddling and favoring certain creditors while the company was facing insolvency.

Olympic chief drawn into crypto investigation

According to local news outlet TVP World, investigators allege that Piesiewicz recovered all of the money he had invested through Zondacrypto while thousands of other customers were unable to withdraw their funds.

The allegations place the president of Poland’s Olympic Committee at the center of a widening investigation into the exchange’s collapse. Zondacrypto became a general sponsor of the Polish Olympic Committee in October 2025, creating a financial relationship between the cryptocurrency platform and one of the country’s most prominent sporting organizations.

The charges remain allegations, and the available information does not establish that Piesiewicz committed the alleged offenses. His detention and prosecution are part of an ongoing investigation in which authorities are examining the treatment of customers and creditors as Zondacrypto’s financial difficulties intensified.

Zondacrypto collapse raises questions over customer funds

Zondacrypto halted trading in April amid a liquidity crisis. Around the same period, then-CEO Przemysław Kral disclosed that the exchange could not access a cryptocurrency wallet containing approximately 4,500 Bitcoin because it did not possess the necessary private keys.

The episode raised questions about the exchange’s custody arrangements and ability to meet customer withdrawal demands. For an exchange handling customer assets, access to private keys is a fundamental operational requirement, making the reported loss of access particularly significant as authorities examine the circumstances surrounding the platform’s failure.

The investigation has also extended beyond Piesiewicz. Kral has reportedly been charged with participating in large-scale fraud and is cooperating with Polish prosecutors while seeking leniency. Earlier reports said investigators estimated that Zondacrypto customers could have lost at least 2.4 billion Polish zlotys, equivalent to roughly $650 million.

Regulatory scrutiny extends beyond the exchange

The case illustrates how the consequences of a cryptocurrency exchange failure can extend beyond customers and corporate executives to financial partners, sponsors and other organizations connected to the platform.

For the crypto industry, the investigation also highlights the importance of asset segregation, custody controls and transparent treatment of creditors when an exchange encounters liquidity problems. These issues have become increasingly important as digital-asset platforms seek closer relationships with established financial and institutional organizations.

The Zondacrypto investigation is still developing, and further charges or findings could clarify how customer assets were managed before the exchange stopped operations. The treatment of creditors and the recovery of customer funds will likely remain central to the case as Polish prosecutors continue examining the exchange’s financial activities and its wider network of relationships.
