SKN | Polygon Expands Stablecoin Payments Infrastructure to Solana as Cross-Chain Demand Grows

Key Points:

  • Polygon brings Open Money Stack to Solana: Businesses can access bank funding, cross-chain transfers, stablecoin conversion and global payouts through a single integration.
  • Solana’s stablecoin activity attracts infrastructure providers: The Solana Foundation reported more than $5 trillion in stablecoin transaction volume this year, highlighting the network’s growing role in payments.
  • Enterprise adoption expands: Cross-border payments firm Kira is among the first businesses using the infrastructure on Solana to convert stablecoin transfers into dollars for supplier payments.

Polygon Labs is extending its stablecoin payments infrastructure to Solana, allowing businesses operating on the network to connect traditional financial accounts with blockchain-based transfers and international payouts through a single integration. The expansion brings Polygon’s Open Money Stack to Solana for the first time, as payment providers seek to reduce the operational complexity of moving funds between banks, digital wallets and multiple blockchain networks.

The initiative reflects a broader shift in digital finance: stablecoins are increasingly being developed as payment infrastructure rather than simply instruments for cryptocurrency trading. For institutional investors and crypto businesses, the ability to connect blockchain settlement with existing banking systems could influence which networks attract payment providers and enterprise activity.

One Integration Connects Banking and Blockchain Payments

Moving money through crypto payment systems often requires several providers to handle deposits, wallet creation, token conversion, cross-chain transfers and final payouts. Each connection can introduce additional technical requirements, commercial agreements and operational dependencies.

Polygon says Open Money Stack consolidates these functions through one technical integration and one commercial relationship. Businesses can adopt the full platform or select individual components to complement their existing payment systems.

Through the infrastructure, companies using Solana can connect bank accounts, cards, cash and cryptocurrency funding channels, create embedded wallets, and route or convert funds across networks including Polygon, Ethereum and Tron. Payouts can then reach bank accounts, cards or digital wallets. This architecture could reduce integration work for businesses operating across multiple payment systems, although actual savings will depend on implementation costs, provider coverage and transaction requirements.

Solana’s Stablecoin Activity Supports the Expansion

The expansion comes as Solana strengthens its position as a venue for stablecoin transfers and financial applications. According to the Solana Foundation, the network processed more than $5 trillion in stablecoin volume this year. The figure highlights the scale of activity taking place on Solana, although transaction volume alone does not establish how much represents payments for goods and services rather than trading or other blockchain activity.

Polygon Foundation co-founder and CEO Sandeep Nailwal said the expansion addresses a recurring challenge for banks and fintech companies: connecting cryptocurrency systems with the accounts and payment networks their customers already use.

The strategy also illustrates how blockchain infrastructure providers can cooperate across competing networks. Rather than requiring businesses to choose a single blockchain for every transaction, cross-chain payment tools seek to connect different ecosystems according to operational needs and customer preferences.

Kira Adoption Highlights Cross-Border Use Cases

Cross-border payments company Kira is among the first businesses adopting Solana through Open Money Stack. The company is using the infrastructure to help clients convert stablecoin transfers into dollars deposited in bank accounts, including for payments to overseas suppliers.

This use case illustrates the distinction between transferring a digital token and completing a commercial payment. Businesses generally need the recipient to receive usable funds, often in a local bank account, rather than merely receive cryptocurrency in a wallet.

The expansion also builds on Polygon’s wider payments strategy, including its acquisition of crypto-cash firm Coinme. Meanwhile, Solana has continued developing its institutional infrastructure, with the source report citing a new settlement standard developed with input from JPMorgan and the rollout of its Alpenglow upgrade.

Looking ahead, adoption will depend on the reliability of banking connections, stablecoin liquidity, conversion costs, regulatory compliance and the availability of payout services in different markets. Polygon’s expansion gives businesses another route into Solana’s ecosystem, but sustained usage will matter more than headline transaction volumes. For crypto investors, the key development is the growing competition to make stablecoins practical for everyday business payments and cross-border settlement.
