Key Points:

  • Tether reported $1.5 billion in third-quarter operating profit, bringing its nine-month net operating profit to $4.5 billion.
  • Excess reserves increased to $7.95 billion at the end of September, nearly doubling from $4.1 billion in June, while total assets reached $191.5 billion.
  • Tether held $132.4 billion in direct and indirect US Treasury exposure and Bitcoin reserves valued at $8.37 billion, reinforcing its substantial exposure to traditional financial assets and digital currencies.

Tether Reports Stronger Reserves and Third-Quarter Profit

Tether reported $1.5 billion in third-quarter operating profit as its excess reserves nearly doubled, highlighting the growing financial scale of the world’s largest stablecoin issuer.

Figures released alongside the company’s latest attestation, prepared by independent accounting firm BDO, showed that Tether held approximately $191.5 billion in assets against $183.5 billion in liabilities as of September 30, 2026.

The resulting reserve surplus reached $7.95 billion, compared with approximately $4.1 billion at the end of June. The increase provides a larger financial buffer beyond the assets required to cover outstanding liabilities.

Tether also reported $4.5 billion in net operating profit during the first nine months of 2026. According to the company, earnings were primarily driven by income generated from US Treasury bills and reverse repurchase agreements.

The results reflect the importance of traditional fixed-income assets within Tether’s reserve and revenue structure as demand for dollar-backed stablecoins continues to expand.

US Treasury Exposure Reaches $132.4 Billion

Tether’s direct and indirect US Treasury holdings totaled $132.4 billion at the end of September.

The scale of that exposure places the company among significant holders of US government debt. According to August data from the US Treasury Department, South Korea held approximately $134.2 billion in US Treasury securities, while the United Arab Emirates held $116.1 billion.

Tether’s reported Treasury exposure was therefore close to South Korea’s holdings and above those of the UAE.

This concentration highlights the connection between the stablecoin industry and traditional financial markets. Treasury securities provide Tether with income-generating assets while supporting the reserve structure behind USDT.

As stablecoin circulation expands, issuers’ demand for short-term government securities can become increasingly relevant to financial markets, particularly as large reserve portfolios develop alongside traditional institutional holdings.

Bitcoin Reserves Increase to $8.37 Billion

Beyond government securities, Tether continued to maintain substantial exposure to Bitcoin.

Its Bitcoin reserves were valued at approximately $8.37 billion at the end of September, up from around $5.8 billion at the end of June.

The increase reflects a larger reported market value for the company’s Bitcoin holdings. However, the figures provided do not separate the impact of additional purchases from changes in Bitcoin’s market price.

The combination of Treasury securities and Bitcoin illustrates Tether’s exposure to both traditional financial instruments and digital assets. While government securities contribute to reserve income, Bitcoin represents a separate component of the company’s asset portfolio.

USDT Maintains Dominant Position in Stablecoin Market

Tether’s USDT remains the largest stablecoin globally, representing approximately 60% of the $297.3 billion stablecoin market, according to DefiLlama data.

On Friday, CEO Paolo Ardoino said USDT’s user base had surpassed 700 million. He also highlighted the importance of emerging markets in driving adoption.

Stablecoins have become an important component of cryptocurrency infrastructure, supporting trading, payments and access to dollar-denominated value across international markets.

USDT’s market position gives Tether significant influence within the digital asset ecosystem. Its expanding user base and substantial reserve portfolio also increase the importance of transparency, asset management and financial reporting.

Reserve Transparency Remains Under Scrutiny

Despite its financial growth, Tether continues to face scrutiny over the transparency of its reserves.

The company announced in August that it had completed its first full independent financial statement audit conducted by KPMG US. However, the audited financial statements were not made publicly available, according to the report.

The distinction between periodic reserve attestations and a full financial statement audit remains important when evaluating the level of information available to investors, regulators and market participants.

Tether’s latest figures provide an updated view of its assets, liabilities and reserve surplus, while broader questions about public financial disclosure remain relevant to the stablecoin sector.

Outlook

Tether’s third-quarter results demonstrate the financial scale of the stablecoin industry, with nearly $8 billion in excess reserves, substantial Treasury exposure and continued growth in USDT adoption. Its expanding Bitcoin holdings add another dimension to its balance-sheet strategy, while the company’s profitability remains closely connected to traditional fixed-income markets. As stablecoins become more deeply integrated into global payments and digital asset infrastructure, reserve transparency, asset quality and financial resilience will remain central considerations for regulators and institutional participants.
