Key Points
- A wallet associated with US government-seized cryptocurrency transferred more than 12,267 BTC, valued at over $1 billion at the time of reporting.
- The transaction followed separate transfers totaling approximately $770 million in Bitcoin to a Coinbase Prime wallet, drawing attention to government-controlled crypto movements.
- Blockchain analysts linked the wallet to funds recovered from the 2016 Bitfinex hack, but the recipient’s identity and the purpose of the latest transfers remained unconfirmed.
The US government has moved another substantial amount of Bitcoin associated with seized cryptocurrency, with blockchain data showing a transfer of more than 12,267 BTC worth over $1 billion. The transaction occurred hours after separate government-linked transfers totaling approximately $770 million in Bitcoin to a Coinbase Prime wallet.
The movements have attracted attention because of their scale and connection to cryptocurrency seized through criminal investigations. However, transfers between wallets do not, by themselves, establish that the government intends to sell the assets.
Blockchain Data Links Wallet to Bitfinex Recovery
Blockchain data recorded the latest transaction on Wednesday. Arkham Research attributed the sending wallet to cryptocurrency recovered in connection with the 2016 Bitfinex exchange hack, during which attackers stole 119,756 BTC.
The recipient address had not been publicly identified at the time of reporting. It was therefore unclear whether the transfer represented internal wallet management, movement to a custodian or another operational purpose.
The earlier transactions involving approximately $770 million in Bitcoin were directed to a Coinbase Prime wallet. The US Marshals Service and Department of Justice had been contacted for comment on those transfers, but no immediate response was reported.
Without official confirmation, the transactions should be treated as movements of government-associated assets rather than evidence of a confirmed liquidation.
US Government’s Bitcoin Holdings Remain Significant
Estimates cited in the report placed US government Bitcoin holdings at approximately 328,372 BTC in 2026. These assets have accumulated through seizures connected to criminal cases and investigations.
The size of the holdings means that large transfers can attract significant attention from cryptocurrency traders and market observers, particularly when the destination addresses are linked to major custodians or exchanges.
Nevertheless, the market implications depend on what happens after a transfer. Moving Bitcoin to another wallet or a custody platform does not necessarily mean the assets have entered the market for sale.
Strategic Bitcoin Reserve Adds Policy Context
The transfers also come against the backdrop of US policy discussions surrounding a national Bitcoin reserve.
President Donald Trump signed an executive order in March 2025 establishing a strategic Bitcoin and digital-asset reserve framework. Lawmakers have continued efforts to codify the initiative into federal law.
The distinction between executive policy and legislation remains important, as the longer-term treatment of government-held Bitcoin depends on the governing framework and how seized assets are managed.
The latest transactions do not, on their own, indicate a change in reserve policy or establish whether the transferred Bitcoin will remain in government custody.
Outlook
The movement of more than $1 billion in Bitcoin underscores the scale of cryptocurrency assets controlled by US authorities and the attention that large government-linked transactions can generate. The central unanswered questions concern the recipient wallet, the operational purpose of the transfers and whether any subsequent disposition is planned. Until authorities provide additional information, the transactions should not be interpreted as confirmation of an impending Bitcoin sale or a change in the government’s reserve strategy.
