SKN | Project Eleven Develops Quantum Recovery Tool for Bitcoin Wallets, but Satoshi’s Coins Remain Unrecoverable

Key Points

  • Project Eleven has developed a zero-knowledge proof system that could help Bitcoin users recover funds after a future quantum computing attack.
  • The recovery method generates proofs in approximately 243 milliseconds on a standard laptop without requiring specialized hardware.
  • The solution allows wallet owners to prove ownership through their wallet’s key derivation path, even if cryptographic signatures become vulnerable.
  • The approach would not protect dormant wallets, including the estimated 1.1 million Bitcoin believed to belong to Bitcoin creator Satoshi Nakamoto.

Quantum research firm Project Eleven has unveiled a proof-of-concept recovery mechanism designed to help Bitcoin users retain ownership of their funds in the event that powerful quantum computers break the cryptography securing today’s wallets.

The solution relies on zero-knowledge proofs (ZKPs), enabling wallet owners to prove they control a wallet without revealing the underlying private keys.

The project addresses one of the cryptocurrency industry’s most widely discussed long-term security concerns: the possibility that future quantum computers could derive private keys from exposed public keys, allowing attackers to steal digital assets.

Understanding the “Q-Day” Scenario

Researchers refer to the hypothetical breakthrough as “Q-Day,” the point at which quantum computers become capable of defeating the elliptic curve cryptography used by Bitcoin.

Today’s Bitcoin signatures rely on mathematical problems that are effectively impossible for classical computers to reverse.

However, quantum algorithms—most notably Shor’s algorithm—could theoretically solve those problems efficiently, allowing attackers to calculate private keys directly from public keys that have already been revealed on the blockchain.

According to estimates referenced in Bitcoin Improvement Proposal 361 (BIP-361), more than 34% of all Bitcoin resides in addresses that have exposed their public keys and could therefore become vulnerable if practical quantum computing arrives.

Zero-Knowledge Proofs Offer an Alternative

Project Eleven’s approach avoids relying on traditional digital signatures after a quantum breakthrough.

Instead, the system uses a wallet’s hierarchical key derivation structure as proof of ownership.

Modern Bitcoin wallets generate addresses from a master key using a chain of cryptographic derivations protected by one-way hashing functions.

Even if an attacker compromises an individual address after Q-Day, they would still be unable to reconstruct the higher-level keys used to generate the wallet’s entire structure.

Using zero-knowledge proofs, a wallet owner can demonstrate knowledge of those parent keys and authorize the migration of funds to quantum-resistant addresses without exposing sensitive cryptographic material.

Performance Makes the Concept Practical

One of the most significant achievements of the project is its efficiency.

Project Eleven reported that proof generation takes approximately 243 milliseconds on a standard Apple M5 MacBook Air using four CPU cores, while verification requires roughly 40 milliseconds.

The process operates without a graphics processing unit (GPU), requires approximately 2 GB of memory, and does not depend on a trusted setup.

The company also stated that its implementation performs substantially faster than previous approaches, making the technology considerably more practical for real-world deployment.

Satoshi’s Bitcoin Still Faces a Different Challenge

Despite the breakthrough, the proposed recovery mechanism cannot protect every Bitcoin holder.

The system depends on wallet owners possessing the secret information required to generate zero-knowledge proofs.

Bitcoin believed to belong to Satoshi Nakamoto, estimated at roughly 1.1 million BTC, is widely considered inaccessible because no known owner can produce the necessary cryptographic credentials if those wallets were ever exposed to a successful quantum attack.

As a result, dormant wallets with unavailable or lost private keys would remain vulnerable under a post-quantum threat scenario.

Outlook

Project Eleven’s proof-of-concept demonstrates that zero-knowledge cryptography could provide a practical recovery path for many Bitcoin users in a future where quantum computers threaten existing encryption standards. While significant work remains before such a system could be adopted across the Bitcoin network, the research highlights growing efforts to prepare blockchain infrastructure for the long-term challenges posed by advances in quantum computing. At the same time, inactive wallets—including those attributed to Satoshi Nakamoto—would likely remain outside the scope of any recovery mechanism, reinforcing the importance of post-quantum migration strategies as the technology evolves.
