Decentralized perpetual trading platform AFX, which operates on the Arbitrum network, has reportedly suffered a security breach resulting in the loss of approximately $24.15 million.

The incident is believed to have targeted one of the protocol’s crosschain bridge components rather than the core Arbitrum infrastructure, according to blockchain security researchers and Arbitrum developers.

The exploit adds to the growing number of attacks targeting decentralized finance (DeFi) bridges, which continue to represent one of the industry’s most attractive targets for cybercriminals.

Security Firms Detect Suspicious Transactions

Blockchain security company Blockaid reported detecting the exploit at approximately 9:30 p.m. UTC on Wednesday after identifying suspicious activity involving an AFX-operated bridge.

Shortly afterward, Offchain Labs co-founder Stephen Goldfeder confirmed that the incident involved a third-party protocol rather than Arbitrum’s own bridge infrastructure.

Goldfeder stated that investigators were reviewing the incident while emphasizing that the Arbitrum native bridge had not been hacked or exploited.

The clarification helped distinguish the attack from the underlying blockchain network, indicating that the vulnerability was isolated to an external application built on Arbitrum.

Stolen USDC Converted Into Ethereum

Blockchain analytics indicated that the attacker transferred approximately 24.15 million USDC through the compromised bridge before moving the funds onto the Ethereum network.

Onchain tracking showed the assets were subsequently used to purchase approximately 12,467 Ether (ETH) at an average price of around $1,937 per token.

Converting stablecoins into Ether is a common tactic used by attackers to move funds across decentralized ecosystems, making asset recovery more difficult while increasing liquidity options.

Investigators continue monitoring the associated wallet addresses for any further movement of the stolen assets.

Crosschain Bridges Remain High-Risk Infrastructure

Crosschain bridges play a critical role in decentralized finance by allowing digital assets to move between different blockchain networks.

However, their complexity has also made them one of the most frequently targeted components of the DeFi ecosystem.

Bridge exploits have accounted for billions of dollars in cryptocurrency losses over recent years, prompting developers to invest heavily in enhanced security audits, monitoring systems and protocol upgrades.
