SKN | US Spot Bitcoin ETFs Post Best Week Since April With $1B Inflows

US spot Bitcoin ETFs attracted approximately $1 billion in net inflows during the week, marking their strongest weekly performance since April and their third-strongest showing since October. The rebound points to renewed institutional demand for Bitcoin after a period of uneven ETF flows. The surge also comes as the recent Coldcard hardware-wallet incident puts renewed attention on the security challenges of self-custody and raises questions about whether some investors could increasingly favor regulated investment products instead.

Bitcoin ETFs See Renewed Institutional Demand

US spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds experienced a sharp recovery in weekly inflows, with approximately $1 billion entering the funds during the week.

Bloomberg ETF analyst Eric Balchunas described the performance as the strongest weekly showing since April and the third-best week for spot Bitcoin ETFs since October.

The renewed inflows suggest institutional demand may be regaining momentum after months of inconsistent flows and relatively subdued Bitcoin price action.

The development is particularly notable because the cryptocurrency market continues to face uncertainty surrounding regulation, security and the broader investment environment.

Bitcoin’s “Silent IPO” Enters Another Phase

The latest ETF activity can be viewed through the concept of Bitcoin’s so-called “silent IPO,” a term popularized by investor Jordi Visser.

The theory describes a shift in Bitcoin ownership in which early investors gradually sell holdings into increasing demand from ETFs and other institutional investors.

Under this framework, the growing presence of institutional buyers can absorb Bitcoin supply being distributed by earlier holders, potentially allowing substantial amounts of new capital to enter the market without producing an immediate price breakout.

The distribution phase has coincided with weaker ETF flows compared with earlier periods of strong institutional demand, making the latest $1 billion weekly inflow particularly significant.

Coldcard Incident Puts Self-Custody Under Pressure

The renewed ETF demand also follows a major security incident involving Coldcard, a Bitcoin hardware wallet developed by Coinkite.

The incident resulted in approximately $116 million worth of Bitcoin being stolen, with the exploit linked to a vulnerability affecting how certain devices generated wallet keys.

The flaw allowed attackers to compromise funds held in wallets created using affected firmware, highlighting the technical responsibilities and security risks associated with managing Bitcoin through self-custody.

The incident has intensified discussion over whether some investors may prefer investment products that remove the need to personally manage private keys and hardware wallets.

Could the Coldcard Hack Drive ETF Demand?

Balchunas suggested that the Coldcard incident could ultimately strengthen the appeal of spot Bitcoin ETFs among investors who are uncomfortable managing the technical requirements associated with self-custody.

He pointed to the increase in ETF inflows following the security incident as a potential connection, while acknowledging that the available data does not establish a direct causal relationship.

The distinction is important because ETF flows can be influenced by numerous factors, including Bitcoin’s price, institutional allocation decisions, broader market conditions and expectations surrounding regulation.

Nevertheless, the timing of the renewed inflows has brought the self-custody debate into sharper focus.

Institutional Access Continues to Expand

Spot Bitcoin ETFs have significantly changed how traditional investors can gain exposure to Bitcoin without directly managing wallets, private keys or blockchain transactions.

For institutional and conventional investors, regulated exchange-traded products can provide a familiar structure for accessing the asset while transferring many of the operational responsibilities associated with direct ownership to financial intermediaries.

The latest inflows therefore reinforce the growing role of ETFs as a bridge between traditional financial markets and Bitcoin.

Closing Insights

The approximately $1 billion weekly inflow into US spot Bitcoin ETFs represents a notable recovery in institutional demand after a period of uneven activity. While it is too early to determine whether the move marks the beginning of a sustained trend, the rebound highlights the continuing importance of regulated investment vehicles in Bitcoin’s institutional market. At the same time, the Coldcard security incident has renewed questions around self-custody, potentially strengthening the case for investors who prefer exposure to Bitcoin through professionally managed financial products.
