Bitcoin climbed back toward the $80,000 threshold as U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs extended an eight-session inflow streak totaling $2.8 billion, reinforcing evidence of renewed institutional demand after the market’s earlier correction. The move comes as crypto investors reassess Bitcoin’s role alongside gold and other assets amid broader concerns about currency debasement and shifting expectations for digital-asset regulation.
ETF Flows Show Stronger Institutional Demand
Bitcoin traded around $79,520 on Thursday after reaching an intraday high of $80,475, according to CoinGecko data. Over the same period, U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs attracted $2.8 billion of net inflows across eight consecutive trading sessions, providing a significant source of demand as Bitcoin approached a technically important price zone.
BlackRock’s IBIT dominated the latest inflow cycle, accounting for approximately $2.02 billion, or 72% of the total. The concentration is notable because it highlights the growing importance of the largest institutional ETF vehicle in determining aggregate fund flows. Across the category since launch, cumulative net inflows have reached $54.7 billion, although the distribution remains uneven.
BlackRock Widens the Gap With Grayscale
The divergence between major ETF issuers has become one of the defining features of the U.S. spot Bitcoin market. IBIT has accumulated approximately $63.1 billion in inflows since launch, while Grayscale’s GBTC has recorded $27.6 billion in cumulative outflows. On Wednesday alone, GBTC lost another $50.4 million.
The difference suggests that institutional exposure is increasingly migrating toward products with stronger asset-gathering momentum and competitive structures. For the broader Bitcoin market, this matters because persistent ETF demand can create a more stable channel for capital entering the asset than episodic activity on crypto-native exchanges.
Eight Days Matter More Than One Strong Session
Analysts caution that ETF flows should not be interpreted as a direct short-term price signal. HashKey researcher Tim Sun estimates that historical flows and Bitcoin prices have a positive but relatively modest correlation, with a coefficient below 0.5. His analysis suggests that each additional $100 million of net ETF inflows has historically corresponded with only about a 0.4% Bitcoin move, underscoring the limited predictive value of individual sessions.
The current streak is more significant because it extends beyond five consecutive trading days. Sun characterized sustained inflows as evidence of persistent spot demand, particularly after Bitcoin previously traded through the $60,000 to $70,000 range. That pattern suggests institutional investors may be becoming more comfortable with the current valuation range even as short-term momentum begins to moderate.
$80,000 Becomes a Test of Market Conviction
The pace of inflows has already slowed from its recent peak. ETF inflows reached $606.3 million on August 20 but remained below $340 million in every subsequent session, with Wednesday recording $232.2 million. Weekly crypto trading volume, meanwhile, exceeded $90 billion, roughly twice the average, with Bitcoin representing just under $40 billion.
That combination creates a more complicated setup near $80,000. Capital continues entering through ETFs, but marginal buying pressure has weakened as Bitcoin moves into an area where previous holders may seek to realize gains. Analysts identify approximately $85,000 as the next significant resistance zone.
For investors, the key question is whether ETF demand can remain persistent as Bitcoin moves above $80,000 rather than whether a single inflow day can extend the rally. Continued creations would strengthen the case for durable institutional participation, while a rapid reversal in flows could expose the market to renewed profit-taking. The next several sessions should therefore provide a clearer indication of whether the current move represents a sustained reallocation toward Bitcoin or another temporary burst of momentum.
