Key Points:
- Polymarket launched Perps on September 3, expanding from prediction markets into leveraged derivatives across crypto, equities, commodities and indexes.
- The platform expanded from 10 initial markets to 67 within hours, with leverage reaching 20x for crypto and several major traditional assets.
- U.S. traders remain excluded from the international Perps product, highlighting the regulatory and competitive challenges facing Polymarket as it moves deeper into financial markets.
Polymarket has expanded beyond event-based prediction markets with the launch of perpetual futures, giving traders access to leveraged positions across crypto, equities, commodities and indexes. The September 3 rollout places the platform directly into a competitive derivatives market at a time when perpetual contracts have become an important source of liquidity, leverage and price discovery across digital assets.
Polymarket Is Building a Broader Trading Platform
The new Perps product initially opened with 10 markets covering Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, HYPE, gold, silver, WTI oil, the S&P 500, Nasdaq 100 and SpaceX. Within hours, the offering expanded to 67 markets, according to Polymarket’s product page, spanning crypto, equities, indexes and commodities.
The strategic significance lies in how different these products are from Polymarket’s traditional contracts. Prediction markets settle at $1 or zero when an event resolves, while perpetual futures have no expiration date and continuously track an underlying asset. An hourly funding mechanism transfers payments between long and short traders to keep the contract aligned with its reference price.
20x Leverage Raises Both Liquidity and Risk
Polymarket permits up to 20x leverage on crypto, the S&P 500, oil, gold and silver, while individual stocks and other real-world assets are capped at 10x. Maintenance margin is set at half the maximum leverage rate. At 20x leverage, an adverse move of roughly 2.5% against a fully leveraged position can therefore trigger liquidation.
That structure can increase capital efficiency and trading activity, but it also makes positions extremely sensitive to short-term volatility. Funding rates are capped at 4% per hour in either direction, an important parameter during periods when long and short positioning becomes heavily imbalanced.
For sophisticated market participants, however, the more important test will not be the headline leverage figure. It will be whether Polymarket can develop sufficient market depth, tight spreads and reliable execution to compete with established perpetual-futures venues.
Regulation Creates a Significant Competitive Divide
Polymarket’s launch also illustrates the increasingly blurred boundary between prediction markets and financial derivatives. The company is entering a segment where platforms such as Hyperliquid already have substantial perpetual-futures activity, while rival prediction-market operator Kalshi obtained CFTC approval for a Bitcoin perpetual contract in May.
The regulatory distinction is particularly important. The international Polymarket Perps platform does not accept orders from U.S. traders, who are instead directed toward Polymarket US, a separate CFTC-regulated exchange. That geographic separation limits the addressable market for the new product while allowing Polymarket to expand derivatives activity internationally.
The Next Test Is Liquidity, Not Product Count
Polymarket is promoting Perps as a multi-asset platform where traders can combine crypto positions with views on interest rates, equities and commodities. That cross-asset architecture could become strategically valuable if users increasingly treat the platform as a venue for macro-oriented trading rather than isolated event speculation.
Investors will therefore be watching trading volume, open interest, funding rates, liquidation activity and liquidity stability across the 67 markets. The launch gives Polymarket another avenue for monetizing its growing trading ecosystem, but high leverage can amplify both participation and forced deleveraging.
For crypto markets, the significance of Perps will ultimately depend on whether Polymarket can convert its strong prediction-market brand into durable derivatives liquidity. As the platform scales, the key question is whether it can attract sophisticated traders and institutional-quality activity while maintaining risk controls strong enough to prevent leverage from becoming the defining feature of the business.
