SKN | Coinbase Earnings in Focus as Robinhood’s Crypto Revenue Plunges 55% and Wall Street Debates Recovery

Key Points:

  • Robinhood’s crypto revenue falls sharply: Third-quarter cryptocurrency transaction revenue dropped 55% year over year to $120 million, while crypto trading volume declined 38%.
  • Coinbase estimates diverge: Analysts forecast third-quarter trading volumes ranging from $141 billion to $173 billion, reflecting uncertainty about the strength of the recovery.
  • Diversification becomes increasingly important: Stablecoin income, derivatives, payments and tokenization could help Coinbase reduce its reliance on transaction fees, although these businesses face their own challenges.

Coinbase Global faces a significant earnings test as Wall Street assesses whether the recovery in cryptocurrency trading can translate into stronger revenue. The exchange was scheduled to report third-quarter results after the U.S. market close on Thursday, October 29, following a period of volatility that left analysts divided over the durability of improving market activity.

The uncertainty has intensified after Robinhood Markets reported a 55% year-over-year decline in crypto transaction revenue to $120 million. The results highlight the difficulty of generating trading income when cryptocurrency demand weakens, raising questions about whether Coinbase experienced a meaningful rebound during the same period.

Analysts Disagree on the Strength of Coinbase’s Trading Recovery

Crypto trading activity improved in September after reaching multiyear lows in June, supported by a recovery in digital-asset prices. However, the rebound appeared to lose momentum in early October, leaving analysts with different expectations for Coinbase’s quarterly performance.

JPMorgan projected Coinbase trading volume of $173 billion, compared with $147 billion from Barclays and $141 billion from Oppenheimer. The estimates translated into transaction revenue forecasts ranging from approximately $578 million to $694 million, while total quarterly revenue expectations ranged from roughly $1.2 billion to $1.4 billion.

Differences in earnings forecasts also reflect uncertainty about operating performance. JPMorgan estimated adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) of $323 million, Barclays projected $360 million, and Oppenheimer expected $262 million. These are analyst estimates rather than reported results.

The divergence underscores a central question for Coinbase: whether improving trading activity is strong enough to offset weaker market conditions and potential pressure on fees. Barclays highlighted signs of slowing spot-market momentum, while Oppenheimer reduced its trading-volume forecast by 20% amid weaker activity.

Robinhood’s Results Raise Questions About Industry Pricing Power

Robinhood’s third-quarter figures provide a warning about the relationship between trading activity and revenue. Its cryptocurrency trading volume fell 38% during the period, contributing to the decline in transaction revenue. The contrast with stronger performance in other businesses suggests that the slowdown was not uniform across the platform.

Robinhood reported $173 million in prediction-market revenue, more than six times the year-earlier figure, while options and equities trading also recorded growth. Its experience illustrates how platforms with diversified revenue streams may be better positioned to offset weakness in a particular asset class.

Coinbase remains particularly exposed to cryptocurrency trading because transaction fees account for a significant part of its business. If customers trade less frequently or exchanges face pressure to lower fees, increased market activity may not translate proportionately into higher revenue. The extent of that pressure will be an important factor in interpreting the company’s results.

Stablecoins and Derivatives Offer Potential Revenue Support

Coinbase’s stablecoin business could provide a partial buffer against fluctuations in trading. The exchange earns a share of income generated by reserves backing USDC, the dollar-pegged stablecoin issued by Circle. JPMorgan estimated that Coinbase would generate $320 million in stablecoin revenue during the quarter, although this figure was a forecast, not a confirmed result.

This revenue stream carries risks of its own. Lower interest rates could reduce returns on reserve assets, while competition could affect Coinbase’s share of the income. The company is also expanding into derivatives, payments and tokenized assets as it seeks to broaden its business beyond spot trading.

Its acquisition of crypto derivatives exchange Deribit strengthened its presence in options and futures. Yet recent volume trends were mixed: Barclays reported that Coinbase International futures volume fell 12% from the second quarter, while Deribit’s combined options and futures volume increased by just 2%.

Coinbase’s earnings report and management commentary will help clarify whether September’s recovery delivered meaningful financial improvement and whether newer business lines are gaining enough traction to reduce dependence on retail trading. Investors will also be watching transaction revenue, stablecoin income and derivatives activity for evidence of how the company is navigating weaker pricing power. The broader issue for the digital-asset sector is whether trading platforms can sustain earnings when cryptocurrency activity becomes less consistent.
