Key Points:

  • Uber completed a tokenization pilot with HSBC, Franklin Templeton, Tradeweb, and Fireblocks on the Canton Network, demonstrating how corporate cash can remain invested while supporting payment obligations outside conventional market hours.
  • The system connected HSBC tokenized bank deposits with Franklin Templeton’s tokenized money market fund shares, allowing Uber to purchase and redeem fund holdings, including over a weekend.
  • The initiative highlights the potential for blockchain-based settlement to improve working-capital efficiency, although the project remains a pilot rather than a fully established corporate treasury service.

Uber has tested a blockchain-based treasury system designed to keep corporate cash generating returns while preserving access to funds for operational payments around the clock. The pilot, conducted with HSBC, Franklin Templeton, Tradeweb, and Fireblocks on the Canton Network, illustrates how tokenization could address a longstanding limitation in institutional finance: the gap between investment returns and the availability of liquidity outside traditional banking hours.

Tokenization Addresses a Corporate Treasury Challenge

Large companies routinely manage substantial cash balances to meet payroll, supplier payments, operational expenses, and other financial obligations. However, maintaining immediate access to these funds can mean leaving significant amounts in bank accounts rather than investing them in short-term instruments such as money market funds.

The problem becomes more pronounced during evenings, weekends, and holidays, when conventional financial markets and settlement systems may be unavailable. Traditional money market fund transactions can face cutoff restrictions and settlement periods of T+1 or longer, requiring corporate treasurers to maintain additional cash buffers or depend on credit facilities.

Uber’s pilot explored whether blockchain infrastructure could reduce this compromise. Instead of choosing between earning returns and maintaining payment flexibility, the company demonstrated a system that connected tokenized investments with tokenized bank deposits through a shared settlement network.

How HSBC, Franklin Templeton, and Canton Connected the System

The transaction involved several established financial institutions and digital asset infrastructure providers, each performing a distinct function. Uber used HSBC Tokenized Deposits to purchase shares in a Franklin Templeton tokenized money market fund through Tradeweb. Fireblocks supplied the wallet infrastructure, while the Canton Network supported the transactions and settlement.

The system used delivery-versus-payment (DvP) settlement, a mechanism that coordinates the transfer of payment and financial assets so that both sides of a transaction are completed together. This approach is intended to reduce settlement risk by avoiding situations in which one party transfers funds without receiving the corresponding asset.

An important feature was the ability to redeem part of the fund holdings over a weekend. The pilot therefore demonstrated how corporate treasury assets could remain invested beyond conventional market hours while still being converted into liquidity when required. The companies involved also described the arrangement as supporting continuous yield throughout the investment lifecycle.

Why Institutional Investors Are Watching Tokenized Cash

The significance extends beyond Uber’s treasury operations. Tokenized money market funds and bank deposits could provide institutions with more flexible ways to manage working capital, particularly businesses operating internationally or processing payments continuously.

By reducing the amount of cash held in non-yielding buffers, companies could potentially improve the efficiency of their available capital. Uber’s vice president of corporate finance, treasury and capital markets, Odette Rodrigues, said the solution offers greater flexibility to optimize returns while meeting payment obligations and reducing the need to maintain liquidity reserves.

For Franklin Templeton, the pilot also demonstrates how tokenized investment products can connect with commercial bank money and established trading infrastructure. HSBC’s participation highlights the potential role of regulated banks in linking traditional deposits with blockchain-based financial transactions. Meanwhile, Tradeweb and Fireblocks provide the trading and wallet capabilities required to make the process operationally accessible to corporate clients.

Adoption Depends on Scale, Regulation, and Reliability

Despite the potential advantages, the pilot does not establish that tokenized treasury management has become a mainstream corporate practice. Wider adoption will depend on the reliability of settlement infrastructure, regulatory treatment of tokenized assets, custody arrangements, and the ability to integrate these systems with existing corporate financial controls.

The structure also requires investors to distinguish between tokenized bank deposits and tokenized money market fund shares. They represent different financial instruments, with distinct issuers, legal rights, and risk considerations. The pilot’s delivery-versus-payment mechanism can improve transaction coordination, but it does not eliminate the underlying risks associated with banks, investment funds, or operational technology.

Going forward, the important development will be whether institutions move beyond demonstrations toward regular commercial use. If tokenized deposits and money market funds can operate reliably across financial institutions and payment networks, corporate treasuries may gain greater flexibility in deploying cash. For digital asset markets, the development reinforces a broader trend: blockchain adoption is increasingly being driven by practical institutional applications rather than cryptocurrency trading alone.
