Key Points:

  • Soter Insure has attracted strategic investment from SC Ventures, Standard Chartered’s innovation and investment arm, and Japan’s SBI Group in the second close of its Series B funding round.
  • The company has disclosed total funding of $23.5 million, alongside more than 500 BTC and 2,000 ETH, with the cryptocurrency contributions valued at approximately $43 million at the prices cited in the report.
  • The investment will support greater underwriting capacity, technology development and international expansion as institutional demand for digital asset insurance increases.

Institutional participation in cryptocurrency markets increasingly depends on more than trading access, custody and regulatory clarity. Financial institutions also require insurance capable of addressing risks specific to digital assets, including theft, smart contract failures and staking-related losses. The latest investment in Soter Insure by Standard Chartered’s SC Ventures and Japan’s SBI Group highlights how established financial players are backing this emerging segment of crypto market infrastructure.

Standard Chartered and SBI Join Galaxy-Led Funding Round

Soter announced on November 5, 2026, that SC Ventures and SBI Group had joined its Series B as strategic investors. The second closing also included additional investment from Token Bay Capital, an existing backer since Soter’s Series A. The round is led by Galaxy Digital, which previously supported the company alongside other major financial and digital asset investors.

The first closing, announced in July 2026, included participation from Coinbase Ventures, Franklin Templeton and Brevan Howard Digital. With the latest commitments, Soter disclosed total funding of $23.5 million, in addition to more than 500 BTC and 2,000 ETH. The cryptocurrency contributions were valued at approximately $43 million at the prices cited in the report, bringing the combined headline funding value to roughly $66.5 million.

The company has not disclosed the individual investment amounts contributed by the new strategic investors or its post-funding valuation. Nevertheless, the participation of established financial groups alongside crypto-native investors reflects growing institutional attention toward specialized risk-management services.

Insurance Addresses a Structural Gap in Institutional Crypto Adoption

Soter focuses on insurance products designed for financial institutions operating in the digital asset economy. Its offerings include directors and officers liability, professional indemnity, crime, specie, slashing and smart contract failure coverage. Policies can be denominated in traditional currencies or native digital assets, an important feature for businesses whose operational exposures and liabilities are directly connected to cryptocurrency holdings.

These products address risks that conventional insurance arrangements may not adequately cover. A custody breach, for example, can create substantial financial exposure, while smart contract vulnerabilities and staking penalties introduce technical risks that require specialized underwriting expertise. As banks, asset managers and institutional investors expand their digital asset activities, the availability of suitable insurance becomes increasingly relevant to internal risk policies and operational requirements.

Soter founder and CEO Henson Orser described the investment as a combination of traditional financial institutions and digital asset investors supporting insurance capacity at institutional scale. SC Ventures principal Herve Francois similarly characterized insurance as an important but frequently overlooked component of the digital asset ecosystem.

Expansion Targets Major Digital Asset Markets

Soter intends to deploy the funding toward expanding its underwriting capacity, technology capabilities and international operations. Its targeted markets include Asia-Pacific, Europe and the United States, with the company identifying its Hong Kong presence as part of its regional expansion strategy.

Headquartered in Abu Dhabi and operating out of Bermuda, Soter also maintains offices in London, New York and Dubai. Its geographic footprint places the company within several important financial and digital asset markets, although expansion will depend on local regulatory requirements and the availability of suitable insurance capacity.

Institutional Growth Will Depend on Underwriting Performance

The investment signals that digital asset insurance is attracting strategic capital from both traditional finance and the cryptocurrency industry. However, funding alone does not establish the scale of protection Soter can ultimately provide. Investors will need to monitor its underwriting capacity, policy adoption, claims performance and ability to price risks associated with rapidly evolving blockchain technologies.

As institutional participation expands, the development of credible insurance arrangements could become an important factor in determining how quickly financial institutions increase their exposure to digital assets. Soter’s latest funding provides resources to pursue that opportunity, while its ability to translate investor backing into sustainable insurance capacity will be the more meaningful measure of its long-term progress.
