Key Points:

  • SC Ventures, the venture arm of Standard Chartered, and Japan’s SBI Group have joined Soter Insure’s Series B funding round as strategic investors. The size of the round was not disclosed.
  • The investment brings traditional financial institutions together with crypto-native investors, including Galaxy, Coinbase Ventures and Franklin Templeton, around the development of institutional digital asset insurance.
  • Soter provides specialized coverage for custody, cybercrime, professional liability, smart contract failures and proof-of-stake slashing, addressing risks that conventional insurance providers have been reluctant to cover.

Standard Chartered and SBI Group are strengthening their exposure to digital asset infrastructure through a strategic investment in Soter Insure, a specialist insurer focused on cryptocurrency-related risks. The participation of the two financial groups in Soter’s Series B round highlights a growing institutional requirement that extends beyond trading platforms and custody services: the availability of insurance capable of addressing the operational and technical risks associated with holding and managing digital assets.

Traditional Finance and Crypto Investors Converge Around Insurance Infrastructure

SC Ventures, Standard Chartered’s venture investment arm, and Japanese financial group SBI have joined Soter’s Series B funding round as strategic investors. The round is led by Galaxy, the crypto financial services firm founded by Mike Novogratz. Its first closing in July included investments from Coinbase Ventures, Franklin Templeton and Brevan Howard Digital, while existing investor Token Bay Capital also contributed additional capital in the second closing.

The funding amount was not disclosed. Nevertheless, the composition of the investor group is significant. It combines established financial institutions, international investment organizations and companies with direct experience in digital asset markets. SC Ventures has deployed more than $1 billion across over 30 portfolio companies since 2018, providing a broader institutional context for its participation.

For Soter, the strategic value extends beyond capital. Bringing traditional finance and digital asset investors together could help address the insurance capacity constraints facing banks, asset managers and other institutions entering cryptocurrency markets.

Soter Addresses Insurance Gaps in Digital Asset Operations

Incubated by venture firms Further Ventures and WebN Group, Soter is headquartered in Abu Dhabi and operates out of Bermuda, with offices in London, New York and Dubai. Its insurance products are designed primarily for financial institutions rather than individual cryptocurrency holders.

The company’s coverage includes crime insurance, specie coverage for assets held in custody, professional indemnity and directors and officers insurance. These products address risks familiar to traditional financial institutions but often more difficult to insure when the underlying assets are digital and the infrastructure operates through blockchain networks.

Two products are particularly specific to the cryptocurrency industry. Smart contract failure coverage is designed to provide protection when blockchain-based code responsible for executing transactions or managing funds fails. Meanwhile, slashing coverage protects businesses participating in proof-of-stake networks, where validators can lose part of their staked assets as a penalty for violating network rules.

Digital Asset-Denominated Policies Introduce Greater Flexibility

Another distinguishing feature of Soter’s insurance model is its ability to denominate policies in digital assets as well as conventional currencies. An institution holding Bitcoin, for example, can obtain coverage denominated in Bitcoin rather than relying exclusively on a traditional currency-based policy.

This structure reflects the operational realities of institutions managing cryptocurrency portfolios. Insurance denominated in the underlying asset could provide a closer relationship between the value of the insured holdings and the coverage itself. However, Soter’s policies are commercial insurance products, not government-backed guarantees or substitutes for deposit insurance. Their scope remains subject to policy terms and applicable conditions.

Insurance Capacity Could Influence Institutional Crypto Adoption

Soter founder and CEO Henson Orser argued that banks cannot expand their digital asset operations without the risk protection available in traditional financial markets. The participation of SC Ventures and SBI alongside Galaxy and other crypto investors reflects a shared interest in developing insurance capacity at institutional scale.

The broader significance lies in the infrastructure required to support institutional participation in digital assets. Custody, compliance and market liquidity are important, but insurance can also influence how financial institutions evaluate operational exposure and allocate capital to emerging financial services.

Going forward, attention will turn to whether Soter can expand its underwriting capacity, develop additional coverage for blockchain-related risks and attract more regulated financial institutions as clients. The latest funding development does not establish the scale of its insurance business or guarantee broader adoption. It does, however, demonstrate that traditional financial groups increasingly recognize specialized insurance as an important component of the digital asset ecosystem.
