Key Points:

  • Kalshi launched perpetual futures linked to more than 50 U.S.-listed stocks on November 5, reporting over $300 million in trading volume within hours of the rollout.
  • The launch followed a November 3 statement from the CFTC allowing single-stock perpetual futures to trade on CFTC-registered exchanges under the security futures framework.
  • Kalshi’s entry into the market could intensify competition among regulated exchanges, cryptocurrency platforms and brokerage companies seeking to expand into leveraged derivatives.

Kalshi has entered the U.S. single-stock derivatives market with the launch of perpetual futures, reporting more than $300 million in trading volume within hours of its November 5 debut. The CFTC-regulated prediction market is positioning the product as an onshore alternative to offshore perpetual futures platforms, extending its existing derivatives business beyond cryptocurrencies and commodities. The launch also signals a potential expansion of competition between digital asset infrastructure providers and traditional financial intermediaries.

Single-Stock Perpetual Futures Attract Immediate Trading Activity

Kalshi introduced perpetual futures tied to more than 50 stocks listed on the NYSE and Nasdaq, including Palantir, Meta, SpaceX and McDonald’s. Co-founder and Chief Operating Officer Luana Lopes Lara described the rollout as a stealth launch and said trading volume exceeded $300 million within hours. She characterized the product as one of the company’s most consequential launches.

The contracts extend a derivatives business that Kalshi initially developed around cryptocurrencies. The CFTC approved its Bitcoin perpetual contract in May, while the company added gold and silver perpetual futures in September. The expansion into individual equities represents a broader effort to offer traders exposure to multiple asset classes through a single derivatives platform.

The reported early volume indicates substantial initial trading activity, although it does not establish sustained demand, open interest or the number of individual participants. Those measures will be important in determining whether the launch develops into a durable market rather than an initial surge in trading.

CFTC Regulatory Development Opens the U.S. Market

The launch followed a November 3 statement from CFTC Chairman Michael Selig indicating that perpetual futures tied to individual equities could begin trading on CFTC-registered exchanges for the first time. Under the regulatory framework described by the agency, the contracts were deemed approved as security futures, a category established by Congress in 2000 that falls under the joint oversight of the CFTC and the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Selig argued that regulated domestic availability would give U.S. traders an onshore alternative instead of requiring them to use offshore venues, some of which operate without comparable regulatory oversight. The development therefore represents more than a product launch: it creates a pathway for a previously offshore-focused derivatives category to enter the regulated U.S. market.

Kalshi estimates that annual trading in single-stock perpetual futures exceeds $4.5 trillion, with activity previously taking place offshore. This figure reflects the company’s estimate of the broader market opportunity, not Kalshi’s current trading volume or a confirmed forecast of future U.S. demand.

Leverage and Product Structure Differentiate the Contracts

A perpetual future tracks the price of an underlying asset without an expiration date. Traders can establish positions based on whether a stock rises or falls without directly owning its shares. Unlike traditional options, these contracts do not have strike prices or expiration-related time decay, while Kalshi says its structure carries no rollover costs.

The company charges trading fees and says it does not rely on payment for order flow, a model used by some retail brokerage platforms. Leverage is available, but Kalshi states that it is determined under CFTC rules and is significantly lower than the leverage offered by offshore perpetual futures products.

These features could appeal to traders seeking direct exposure to stock-price movements through derivatives. However, leverage continues to introduce substantial risks, including amplified losses and the possibility of liquidation when positions move against traders.

Competition Could Expand Across Crypto and Traditional Finance

Kalshi’s entry comes as other financial platforms consider expanding into perpetual futures. Lorenzo Valente, director of digital asset research at ARK Invest, previously suggested that companies including Coinbase, Robinhood and Backpack could compete in this segment as regulatory access develops.

For the digital asset industry, the development could bring a familiar derivatives structure into a broader range of regulated financial markets. It also creates a competitive opportunity for platforms with established customer bases, trading infrastructure and regulatory capabilities.

Going forward, market participants will be watching whether Kalshi can sustain trading activity beyond its initial $300 million surge, expand its stock coverage and attract institutional participation. The regulatory framework’s practical implementation and the entry of competing platforms will also shape market development. The launch marks an important expansion of U.S. onshore perpetual futures, but long-term success will depend on liquidity, risk controls, customer adoption and the ability to compete with established derivatives venues.
