SKN | Bitcoin and Ethereum Rise as Markets Await July CPI Inflation Data

Bitcoin and Ethereum moved higher early Wednesday as crypto markets positioned for the release of the U.S. July Consumer Price Index, one of the week’s most important macroeconomic catalysts. The price action reflects a market balancing recent weakness in digital assets against expectations that the inflation report could influence Federal Reserve policy and the broader appetite for risk assets.

Bitcoin Rebounds Toward $64,200 Ahead of CPI

Bitcoin opened at $63,547.05 on August 12, down 0.6% from Tuesday’s opening level, before recovering to $64,194 by 8:00 a.m. ET. That represents an intraday gain of roughly 1.0% from the opening price, indicating that buyers were willing to step back into the market despite the uncertainty surrounding the inflation release.

The move remains relatively modest in the context of Bitcoin’s recent range-bound trading. Rather than signaling a decisive trend change, the rebound suggests traders are positioning ahead of a macro event capable of changing expectations for Treasury yields, the dollar and Federal Reserve policy. Crypto markets have become increasingly sensitive to those variables as institutional participation has expanded.

Ethereum Shows Stronger Early-Morning Momentum

Ethereum followed a similar pattern but posted a larger percentage recovery. ETH opened at $1,881.10, 0.5% above Tuesday’s opening price, and climbed to $1,915.50 by 8:00 a.m. ET. The move represented an increase of approximately 1.8% from the day’s opening level.

The relative strength is notable because Ethereum’s market performance can be particularly sensitive to changes in risk appetite. The combination of spot-market positioning and expectations surrounding Ethereum’s evolving institutional investment products has made macroeconomic data increasingly relevant to the asset’s short-term valuation.

CPI Becomes the Market’s Immediate Macro Test

The July CPI report was scheduled for release at 8:30 a.m. ET, making the early crypto gains vulnerable to a rapid repricing once the figures became available. A softer-than-expected inflation reading could reinforce expectations that monetary conditions may become less restrictive, while a hotter report could push investors toward higher Treasury yields and a stronger dollar, creating pressure on risk-sensitive assets such as cryptocurrencies.

The importance of the report extends beyond the headline inflation rate. Markets are also watching underlying price pressures because persistent inflation could constrain the Federal Reserve’s ability to ease policy even if employment conditions have weakened. That creates a two-sided setup for Bitcoin and Ethereum: cooler inflation could improve liquidity expectations, while renewed inflation pressure could reinforce the higher-for-longer narrative.

Institutional Crypto Exposure Remains Tied to Macro Conditions

The positioning ahead of CPI also illustrates how digital assets increasingly trade as part of the broader global risk complex. Recent research has found that Bitcoin and Ethereum have become more closely connected with traditional financial markets, including equities and macroeconomic variables, particularly during periods of heightened risk sensitivity.

For sophisticated crypto investors, the immediate question is therefore less about the morning’s modest gains and more about whether the inflation data can generate a sustained change in rate expectations. Bitcoin holding above $64,000 and Ethereum remaining near $1,900 will provide an important first read on whether traders view the CPI outcome as supportive or restrictive.

Looking ahead, the CPI release is likely to determine whether the early rebound develops into broader momentum or fades back into the recent trading range. Subsequent moves in Treasury yields, the U.S. dollar and expectations for Federal Reserve policy will be critical confirmation signals, while crypto-specific flows and liquidity will determine how strongly Bitcoin and Ethereum ultimately respond to the macro shift.
