SKN | Bitcoin Stabilizes Near $76,000 After AI-Driven Selloff as U.S. Jobs Report Takes Center Stage

Key Points:

  • Bitcoin recovered toward $76,000 after falling to approximately $75,200 during Thursday’s technology-led market selloff.
  • More than $1 billion in cryptocurrency derivatives positions were liquidated, with leveraged bullish bets accounting for most of the forced selling.
  • Investors are turning their attention to the latest U.S. employment figures for signals about economic momentum, Federal Reserve policy and broader appetite for risk assets.

Bitcoin showed signs of stabilization on Friday after a sharp technology-driven selloff pushed the cryptocurrency toward $75,200 and triggered substantial liquidations across digital asset derivatives markets. The recovery comes as investors assess the broader fallout from declining artificial intelligence and semiconductor stocks, while awaiting U.S. employment data that could influence expectations for monetary policy and the direction of risk-sensitive markets.

AI Sector Weakness Spills into Cryptocurrency Markets

Thursday’s decline reflected a broader reassessment of technology valuations and the investment outlook for artificial intelligence infrastructure. The Nasdaq Composite fell 5.5%, the S&P 500 declined 4.3%, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 3.4%. The Nasdaq 100 dropped 6.4%, while the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index plunged 12%, marking one of its steepest daily declines in recent years.

Bitcoin followed the broader deterioration in risk appetite, reversing much of its post-election recovery and falling approximately 5% over 24 hours. Ether also came under pressure, declining around 7.5%, while XRP and Solana each lost approximately 5.5%. The simultaneous weakness demonstrated that digital assets remained exposed to movements in technology equities and wider financial conditions rather than functioning as an independent defensive market.

Concerns about the AI sector extended beyond company valuations. Investors were also reassessing the financial returns from large-scale data center spending and the possibility that political opposition to infrastructure expansion could slow new projects. This uncertainty has particular implications for Bitcoin mining companies pursuing AI and high-performance computing businesses.

More Than $1 Billion in Liquidations Resets Market Leverage

The market correction was amplified by forced liquidations in cryptocurrency derivatives. According to CoinGlass data cited by CoinDesk, more than $1 billion in leveraged positions were liquidated over the preceding 24 hours, with bullish positions representing the majority of the losses. The scale of forced selling marked the largest liquidation event since the late-October decline, when Bitcoin dropped from nearly $82,000 toward $76,000.

Bitcoin futures open interest also contracted sharply. Aggregate outstanding positions fell below $26 billion, compared with approximately $28 billion earlier in the session, reaching their lowest level since mid-September. The decline suggests that traders were closing positions or being forced out as prices fell, reducing leverage that had accumulated during the preceding recovery.

Although liquidations can intensify short-term volatility, the reduction in open interest may also leave the market with fewer leveraged positions vulnerable to another abrupt price movement. However, lower leverage alone does not establish that underlying spot demand has strengthened.

U.S. Employment Data Becomes the Next Market Catalyst

Attention is now shifting toward the latest U.S. employment figures, which could influence expectations for the Federal Reserve’s interest-rate policy. Employment growth, wage developments and unemployment trends provide important information about the condition of the economy and the potential direction of monetary policy.

For Bitcoin, the implications are not straightforward. Strong employment figures could reinforce expectations that interest rates remain elevated for longer, potentially limiting demand for speculative assets. Conversely, weaker labor-market conditions could strengthen expectations of monetary easing, although concerns about slowing economic growth could initially weigh on risk appetite.

The market’s reaction will therefore depend not only on the headline employment number but also on the broader composition of the report and its implications for inflation and economic resilience.

Recovery Requires Evidence of Sustained Demand

Bitcoin’s rebound toward $76,000 offers an indication that selling pressure has moderated following Thursday’s liquidation wave. However, the broader market remains sensitive to developments in technology equities, AI infrastructure investment and U.S. economic data. Analysts at Wintermute have highlighted $73,000 and $68,000 as potential downside levels if selling pressure intensifies, while a sustained recovery above $80,000 would provide a stronger indication of improving market conditions.

Over the coming sessions, investors will be watching whether Bitcoin can maintain its recovery, whether institutional flows stabilize and whether the employment report changes expectations for monetary policy. Until those signals become clearer, the latest rebound should be viewed as short-term stabilization rather than confirmation that the broader correction has ended.
