SKN | Bitcoin Faces Weak Spot Demand as More Than $1 Billion in Bullish Positions Are Liquidated

Key Points:

  • More than $1 billion in leveraged crypto positions were liquidated during the November 5 selloff, with approximately $954 million coming from bullish bets.
  • U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded approximately $430 million in net outflows, indicating that institutional spot demand was not providing meaningful support during the decline.
  • Bitcoin’s recovery toward $76,000 followed a sharp technology-sector correction, leaving market participants focused on whether reduced leverage can stabilize prices without renewed institutional inflows.

Bitcoin’s latest correction exposed a weakness beneath the market’s previous recovery: leveraged traders were positioned for further gains, while institutional spot demand was insufficient to absorb the selling pressure. More than $1 billion in derivatives positions were liquidated as technology stocks suffered a sharp decline, while substantial withdrawals from U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds added another indication that investors were reducing exposure to digital assets.

Liquidation Wave Reveals the Cost of Excessive Bullish Positioning

Data from CoinGlass showed that approximately $1.08 billion in cryptocurrency positions were liquidated over a 24-hour period during the November 5 selloff. Long positions accounted for approximately $954 million, representing the overwhelming majority of forced closures. These positions belonged to traders expecting prices to rise, many of whom used borrowed capital to increase market exposure.

When Bitcoin and other digital assets declined, positions that could no longer meet margin requirements were automatically closed. This process added selling pressure to an already weakening market, creating a liquidation cycle in which falling prices triggered additional forced sales. Bitcoin accounted for approximately $264 million in liquidations, followed by Ethereum at around $165 million and Solana at approximately $33.5 million.

The scale of the event illustrates how derivatives positioning can amplify movements that initially originate outside the cryptocurrency market. Although liquidations can clear excessive leverage, they do not necessarily indicate that investors have regained confidence or that fresh capital is entering the market.

ETF Withdrawals Highlight the Absence of Institutional Support

The derivatives selloff coincided with substantial withdrawals from U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs. These investment products recorded approximately $430 million in net outflows on November 5, reversing the optimism generated by earlier inflows and weakening the argument that institutional demand was providing a reliable price floor.

ETF flows matter because these vehicles provide traditional investors with regulated access to Bitcoin without requiring direct custody of the underlying cryptocurrency. Sustained inflows can represent an additional source of spot-market demand, while withdrawals may require fund managers to reduce their underlying Bitcoin exposure, depending on fund activity and settlement arrangements.

The latest withdrawals therefore reinforce the distinction between derivatives liquidation and spot-market demand. Forced closures can explain part of the immediate price decline, but ETF redemptions suggest that the market was also experiencing weaker demand through an important institutional investment channel.

Technology Stocks Remain a Major Source of Market Pressure

The cryptocurrency correction developed alongside a sharp decline in U.S. technology equities. The Nasdaq Composite fell approximately 5.5% on November 5, while the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index lost around 12%. Concerns over artificial intelligence investment, infrastructure spending and the sustainability of technology valuations contributed to a broader reduction in risk exposure.

Bitcoin’s reaction demonstrated its continued sensitivity to movements in high-growth equities. Rather than attracting defensive capital during the technology selloff, the cryptocurrency moved lower alongside other risk-sensitive assets. This relationship remains relevant for institutional portfolio managers assessing Bitcoin’s diversification characteristics during periods of market stress.

Leverage Reduction Is Not Yet a Recovery Signal

The reduction in leveraged positions could make the market less vulnerable to another immediate liquidation cascade. However, the absence of meaningful spot demand remains a concern. A sustainable recovery would require more than short-term stabilization; it would need evidence of renewed buying activity, improved ETF flows and stronger participation from investors willing to hold exposure beyond speculative derivatives positions.

Over the coming sessions, investors will be watching Bitcoin’s ability to maintain the $76,000 area, the direction of U.S. spot ETF flows and whether technology equities regain stability. The latest liquidation event may have removed a substantial amount of excessive leverage, but without a recovery in underlying demand, any rebound could remain vulnerable to renewed selling pressure.
