SKN | Bitcoin Whales Accumulate 46,000 BTC as Weak Network Activity Clouds the Recovery

Bitcoin is showing a growing divergence between large-holder accumulation and underlying network activity, with wallets holding more than 10,000 BTC adding more than 46,000 BTC over the past 60 days. The accumulation, reinforced by strong spot Bitcoin ETF inflows, points to improving institutional and large-holder demand, but weaker participation across the broader network suggests the recovery has yet to establish a durable foundation.

Large Bitcoin Holders Are Accumulating at a Six-Month High

CryptoQuant data show that addresses holding more than 10,000 BTC accumulated 46,420 BTC during the 60-day period through August 9. That is the strongest accumulation reading since March 15 and nearly twice the mid-March peak of 23,238 BTC, indicating that the market’s largest holders have materially increased their exposure during the recent period of consolidation.

The trend is significant because whale accumulation can reduce the amount of Bitcoin readily available for trading and potentially absorb selling pressure. However, the data also reveal a divergence among smaller holders. Wallets containing between 0.1 and 1 BTC reduced their balances by approximately 9,700 BTC over the same period, suggesting that accumulation has been concentrated among larger participants rather than broadly distributed across the holder base.

ETF Demand Adds Another Layer of Institutional Support

The whale accumulation has coincided with renewed demand through U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs. The funds attracted approximately $853.5 million across five consecutive sessions during the week ending August 7, reversing a $61.5 million net outflow in the previous week. Cumulative net inflows since launch reached approximately $52.18 billion, according to SoSoValue data.

BlackRock’s IBIT accounted for roughly $690 million of the weekly inflows, or about 80% of the total. The concentration highlights the importance of institutional channels in the current market structure, particularly as traditional investors can obtain Bitcoin exposure without directly holding the underlying asset.

Weak Network Activity Complicates the Bullish Accumulation Signal

Despite the strength in whale and ETF flows, the broader recovery remains less convincing when viewed through network participation and liquidity. Stronger balances among large holders do not necessarily mean that demand is expanding across the wider Bitcoin ecosystem, particularly when smaller wallets are reducing their holdings.

This distinction matters because price accumulation and network health measure different aspects of market strength. Large investors can absorb available supply while trading activity, transaction demand and participation remain subdued. In a thin-liquidity environment, that can produce relatively stable prices without establishing the breadth normally associated with a sustained market expansion.

The Market Is Still Testing Whether Accumulation Can Become a Durable Trend

The current setup therefore presents two competing signals. On one side, the 46,420 BTC increase among large holders and nearly $854 million in weekly ETF inflows suggest that sophisticated capital is becoming more constructive on Bitcoin. On the other, the roughly 9,700 BTC reduction among 0.1-to-1 BTC wallets and weaker network activity indicate that the recovery is not yet being confirmed across the full holder base.

This creates a market in which institutional and whale flows may be doing much of the work supporting prices. For investors assessing the durability of the move, the next phase will depend on whether accumulation broadens, liquidity improves and on-chain activity begins to respond to the stronger positioning among large holders.

Looking ahead, the key question is whether Bitcoin can convert concentrated accumulation into broader market participation. Continued ETF inflows and further whale accumulation would strengthen the demand signal, while renewed distribution by large holders or persistently weak network activity would suggest that the latest recovery remains vulnerable to changes in liquidity and macroeconomic conditions.
