SKN | Bitcoin’s 61-Day Coinbase Discount Raises Questions About U.S. Institutional Demand

Key Points:

  • Bitcoin traded at a 0.13% discount on Coinbase for 61 consecutive days as of November 6, according to Coinbase Markets, indicating weaker buying pressure relative to offshore markets.
  • U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded $1.28 billion in weekly outflows through November 6, while net assets declined to approximately $96 billion, their lowest level in a month.
  • The prolonged discount does not independently establish a Bitcoin market bottom, particularly because previous negative-premium periods ended only after prices had already rebounded.

Bitcoin is showing signs of weakening demand across several indicators associated with the U.S. market. Its prolonged discount on Coinbase, combined with substantial outflows from spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds, has raised questions about whether American investors are reducing their exposure to the cryptocurrency. However, the signals require careful interpretation: a negative Coinbase premium does not necessarily mean that U.S. investors have stopped buying Bitcoin altogether.

The Coinbase Premium Offers a Window Into U.S. Buying Pressure

The Coinbase premium measures the difference between Bitcoin’s price on Coinbase and its price on Binance, one of the largest offshore cryptocurrency exchanges. When Bitcoin trades at a higher price on Coinbase, the premium can indicate stronger demand from U.S.-based participants relative to international traders. When the relationship reverses, a discount suggests comparatively weaker buying pressure in the U.S. market.

According to a November 6 post by Coinbase Markets on X, Bitcoin had traded below its global reference price on Coinbase for 61 consecutive days. The discount stood at approximately 0.13%, placing the reading in the bottom 8% of observations over the previous two years.

The indicator is particularly relevant because U.S. institutions and authorized participants involved in creating and redeeming ETF shares are among the market participants that use Coinbase. Nevertheless, the premium is a relative pricing measure, not a comprehensive record of all U.S. Bitcoin purchases. Institutional transactions conducted through over-the-counter markets may not be fully reflected in the exchange-price relationship.

ETF Outflows Reinforce the Cautious Market Signal

The Coinbase discount has coincided with a difficult period for U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs. These products recorded approximately $1.28 billion in outflows during the week ending November 6. Their combined net assets declined to approximately $96 billion, the lowest level in a month.

Bitcoin was trading around $75,870 in the reported period, only modestly above its 30-day low of $74,722 and approximately 40% below its all-time high. Together, these figures point to a market environment in which price weakness, fund redemptions, and relatively subdued U.S. exchange demand are reinforcing one another.

However, ETF outflows should not be treated as proof that every investor category is selling. They measure net activity within the funds, while the Coinbase premium reflects relative exchange pricing. Neither indicator captures the entire range of institutional, private, and over-the-counter transactions.

Why the Length of the Discount May Be Misleading

There is also a measurement difference behind the reported duration of the negative premium. Coinbase Markets identified 61 consecutive days of discounts as of November 6, while CoinGlass recorded 38 consecutive negative days as of October 31. The difference reflects the use of distinct price data and measurement thresholds.

The size of the current discount also matters. At 0.13%, the gap is relatively narrow. Arbitrage traders, who seek to profit by purchasing Bitcoin on the cheaper exchange and selling it on the more expensive one, can help reduce such differences when market conditions permit. Consequently, the duration of a negative reading does not necessarily mean that the market is experiencing an equally severe imbalance in demand.

CryptoQuant CEO Ki Young Ju offered another interpretation on October 30, noting that the premium had reached a four-year low. His analysis suggested that pronounced bearish sentiment could eventually signal a turning point if U.S. sellers become exhausted. Under that scenario, a reduction in available selling pressure could make it easier for renewed buying to support prices. This remains a market interpretation rather than confirmation that a reversal has begun.

What Investors Should Watch Next

The historical context provides an additional caution. Previous negative-premium streaks reportedly ended only after Bitcoin had already rebounded. This means the indicator has not reliably identified the exact moment when a market bottom forms. Investors should therefore avoid interpreting the 61-day streak as an independent signal that selling pressure has reached its limit.

The next phase will depend on whether U.S. spot ETF flows stabilize, whether Coinbase begins trading at a sustained premium again, and whether Bitcoin can recover from its recent price weakness. A combination of improving fund flows and stronger relative exchange demand would provide more convincing evidence of renewed U.S. participation. Until then, the prolonged discount remains a useful measure of market sentiment, but not definitive proof that American investors have abandoned Bitcoin or that a recovery is imminent.
