SKN | Bitcoin’s August Rally Gains Credibility as Market Liquidity Holds Firm Near $80,000

Key Points:

  • Bitcoin surged nearly 25% last week to above $80,000, marking its strongest weekly performance in more than three years.
  • Average 0.5% market depth across major spot exchanges stood near $9.6 million when the rally began, indicating that substantial liquidity remained available as prices advanced.
  • Market depth eased to approximately $8.7 million by August 25 but remained within normal variation, suggesting the rally was supported by genuine demand rather than thin order books.

Bitcoin’s surge toward $80,000 is showing a market characteristic that is often overlooked: liquidity remained relatively deep as prices advanced. CoinDesk Research data indicate that the rally was accompanied by substantial order-book depth across major spot exchanges, strengthening the case that the move reflected broad demand rather than a handful of large transactions moving prices through a thin market.

The finding is significant for institutional and professional investors because market depth provides an important measure of how much capital can enter or exit an asset without causing disproportionate price movements. With Bitcoin gaining nearly 25% last week, the stability of liquidity offers additional context for assessing the durability of the August rebound.

Market Depth Supports the Rally’s Credibility

Bitcoin began its latest advance on August 18 at approximately $64,000. At that point, average 0.5% market depth across major spot exchanges tracked by CoinDesk Research stood at roughly $9.6 million, representing the combined value of buy and sell orders within 0.5% of the prevailing market price.

That level was broadly comparable with the approximately $9 million record recorded on January 1, when Bitcoin traded around $88,000. It also exceeded the roughly $8 million observed in October when Bitcoin reached record highs above $120,000.

The comparison matters because a price rally accompanied by declining liquidity can be vulnerable to sharp reversals. When depth remains high, however, larger orders can be absorbed with less disruption, providing stronger evidence that capital is moving through the market at scale.

Liquidity Remained Stable as Bitcoin Reached $80,000

By August 25, when Bitcoin reached approximately $80,000, average 0.5% market depth had eased to around $8.7 million. Although lower than the August 18 level, the decline remained within what CoinDesk Research described as normal snapshot variation, with no meaningful thinning around the midpoint of the order book.

The data therefore point to a market in which approximately $24% of Bitcoin’s rally was absorbed without a significant deterioration in near-price liquidity. The same general pattern appeared in Ether and Solana, whose 0.5% market depth on August 25 was also higher than levels recorded in October.

For institutional investors, this distinction is important. Strong prices accompanied by resilient liquidity can indicate broader participation, whereas a similar move in a shallow market could suggest greater susceptibility to individual large orders and rapid volatility.

ETF Flows and Macro Factors Add to the Signal

Liquidity was not the only factor supporting Bitcoin’s advance. The rally coincided with strong exchange-traded fund inflows and an announcement from the U.S. Treasury regarding bond buybacks, providing additional catalysts for the move above $80,000.

The timing also matters because August is typically one of the thinner months for liquidity across financial markets as trading desks operate with reduced staffing during the Northern Hemisphere summer. The ability of Bitcoin’s order-book depth to remain relatively stable during a 25% weekly advance therefore provides a stronger market-quality signal than the price increase alone.

As traders return from summer holidays, liquidity could improve further, potentially allowing larger institutional transactions to be executed with less market impact. At the same time, Bitcoin remains sensitive to macroeconomic conditions, liquidity expectations and shifts in risk appetite.

Going forward, investors will be watching market depth, ETF flows and Bitcoin’s ability to hold the $80,000 area. Sustained liquidity alongside continued demand would strengthen the case that the August rally represents a broad repricing rather than a temporary move driven by thin trading conditions. Conversely, a sharp deterioration in order-book depth during further price gains could provide an early warning that market participation is becoming less robust.
