Key Points:

  • Bitwise Chief Investment Officer Matt Hougan believes the next cryptocurrency bull market will be driven by traditional finance integration rather than speculative trading.
  • Hougan identified Hyperliquid and Robinhood’s blockchain initiatives as key catalysts that could accelerate institutional adoption.
  • Bitwise expects broader adoption of blockchain-based financial infrastructure to benefit major cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin and Ether.
  • The firm’s latest research suggests Bitcoin demand is beginning to recover, signaling that the market may be forming a long-term bottom.

Bitwise Sees New Drivers for the Next Crypto Rally

Bitcoin may be showing early signs of establishing a market bottom, but the next major cryptocurrency rally is likely to be fueled by a different set of catalysts than previous cycles, according to Bitwise Asset Management.

Matt Hougan, the firm’s Chief Investment Officer, said the next phase of growth will be driven less by retail speculation and more by the integration of blockchain technology into traditional financial markets.

Rather than relying solely on increasing cryptocurrency adoption, Hougan believes the industry’s future expansion will come from financial infrastructure that combines the efficiency of blockchain with conventional investment products.

Hyperliquid and Robinhood Highlight Market Evolution

Among the strongest examples of this trend, Hougan pointed to Hyperliquid, a blockchain-based trading platform that has rapidly expanded beyond digital assets.

According to Hougan, nearly half of Hyperliquid’s trading volume now comes from traditional financial products, including commodities, stock indices and other conventional assets.

The platform has continued expanding into additional markets such as spot commodities, prediction markets and options, demonstrating how blockchain infrastructure is increasingly supporting financial products traditionally traded through conventional exchanges.

Hougan also identified Robinhood’s blockchain initiatives, including its Layer-2 network, as another important development that could encourage broader institutional participation in digital assets.

Traditional Finance and Crypto Continue to Converge

Bitwise believes the convergence of traditional finance and blockchain technology will become one of the defining themes of the next cryptocurrency market cycle.

Blockchain-based trading platforms offer several advantages over conventional financial infrastructure, including continuous 24-hour trading, faster settlement and greater accessibility.

As established financial institutions introduce blockchain-powered products and services, demand for digital asset infrastructure is expected to increase, potentially benefiting the broader cryptocurrency ecosystem.

Hougan argued that these developments could create a positive environment not only for infrastructure providers but also for major cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ether.

Bitcoin Demand Shows Early Recovery

Beyond long-term structural trends, Bitwise also believes Bitcoin’s underlying demand is beginning to improve.

The firm’s European Head of Research, Andre Dragosch, recently highlighted signs that Bitcoin’s apparent demand has started accelerating again.

Apparent demand measures the relationship between newly mined Bitcoin entering circulation and the amount of Bitcoin that has remained inactive for at least one year.

An increase in this metric generally suggests that long-term accumulation is strengthening, reducing available supply and potentially supporting higher prices over time.

Market Recovery May Still Take Time

Although Bitwise remains optimistic, many analysts continue to believe the cryptocurrency market is still in the later stages of a bear market.

Spot market demand has remained relatively subdued, and macroeconomic uncertainty continues to influence investor sentiment.

However, improving on-chain metrics and expanding institutional participation have encouraged some market observers to believe the groundwork for the next bull market is gradually taking shape.

If traditional financial firms continue integrating blockchain technology into their products and services, the resulting increase in market participation could provide meaningful support for Bitcoin and the wider digital asset sector.

Outlook

Bitwise believes the next cryptocurrency bull market will be driven by the growing convergence of blockchain technology and traditional finance rather than speculative enthusiasm alone. As platforms such as Hyperliquid and Robinhood expand blockchain-based financial services, institutional adoption could accelerate, strengthening demand for digital assets and potentially helping Bitcoin and Ether lead the next major market recovery.
