Key Points:

  • Schwab to launch spot Bitcoin and Ether trading.
  • Retail clients will access crypto via a dedicated account.
  • Move signals deeper integration of crypto into traditional finance.

Schwab Expands Into Direct Crypto Trading

Charles Schwab is preparing to roll out spot cryptocurrency trading for retail clients, marking its first direct entry into buying and selling digital assets. The initial offering will include Bitcoin and Ether, the two largest cryptocurrencies by market value.

Integrated Experience Across Platforms

Clients will be able to trade and monitor crypto holdings alongside traditional assets like stocks and ETFs through Schwab’s web, mobile, and Thinkorswim platforms. The service will operate through a dedicated crypto account, allowing users to manage diversified portfolios within a single ecosystem.

Custody and Execution Structure

Schwab will hold crypto assets through its banking subsidiary under a custodial model, while trade execution will be handled via a partnership with Paxos. This structure aims to combine regulatory oversight with established crypto infrastructure.

Pricing and Market Positioning

The platform will charge approximately 0.75% per transaction, positioning it above lower-cost crypto exchanges but broadly in line with major platforms like Coinbase. While not the cheapest option, Schwab’s offering focuses on convenience, integration, and trusted custody for mainstream investors.

Gradual Rollout and Expansion Plans

The rollout will occur in phases over the coming weeks and will initially be available to eligible US retail clients, excluding certain states. Schwab also plans to expand its crypto offerings over time by adding more assets and enabling deposits and withdrawals.

Traditional Finance Deepens Crypto Push

Schwab’s move reflects a broader trend of traditional financial institutions embracing digital assets. Firms like Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs have recently launched or filed for Bitcoin-related investment products, signaling growing institutional confidence in crypto markets.

Convergence of Crypto and Traditional Markets

As established financial players enter crypto trading, crypto-native firms are moving into traditional finance through tokenized equities and hybrid products. This convergence suggests a future where digital assets and traditional securities operate within a more unified financial system.
