Key Points

  • Ethereum and Solana recorded the highest cryptocurrency hack losses during the first half of 2026, according to blockchain security firm Blockaid.
  • The crypto industry suffered more than $1 billion in losses across 212 security incidents, marking the highest number of hacks recorded in a six-month period.
  • Ethereum lost approximately $332 million, while Solana followed closely with $326 million in stolen digital assets.
  • Ethereum’s losses were largely driven by smart contract vulnerabilities, while compromised private keys accounted for the vast majority of Solana’s losses.

Blockchain security platform Blockaid reported that cryptocurrency-related losses surpassed $1 billion during the first six months of 2026, highlighting the continued cybersecurity challenges facing the digital asset industry.

According to the firm’s latest security report, the industry recorded 212 security incidents during the period, representing the highest number of hacks ever observed over a six-month timeframe.

Blockaid also found that the number of major exploits increased significantly, with the company verifying 3.4 times more high-impact attacks during the first half of 2026 than throughout all of 2025.

The largest single exploit involved KelpDAO, which accounted for approximately $292 million in losses.

Ethereum Remains the Primary Target

Ethereum experienced the largest financial losses among all blockchain networks, with attackers stealing approximately $332 million through exploits affecting decentralized applications and protocols.

According to Blockaid, most Ethereum incidents resulted from vulnerabilities in smart contracts and protocol code rather than user errors.

Several of the largest attacks involved unauthorized access to privileged accounts, bridge vulnerabilities and weaknesses in decentralized finance infrastructure.

The report noted that Ethereum continues to attract attackers because it hosts many of the cryptocurrency industry’s highest-value applications, including decentralized exchanges, stablecoin platforms and restaking protocols.

Among the major Ethereum-related incidents cited were attacks involving Humanity Protocol, StablR and KelpDAO, while CoWSwap was identified as the primary case involving user error rather than protocol vulnerabilities.

Solana Hack Losses Rise Sharply

Solana recorded approximately $326 million in losses during the first half of the year, nearly matching Ethereum despite a very different attack profile.

Unlike Ethereum, where smart contract vulnerabilities accounted for most losses, more than 98% of Solana’s stolen funds resulted from compromised private keys and signer infrastructure.

Blockaid linked several of the largest Solana incidents, including attacks involving Drift Protocol and Step Finance, to cyber groups associated with North Korea.

Only a small portion of Solana’s losses came from smart contract exploits, including incidents involving Raydium and Volo.

The report noted that Solana’s security challenges have increasingly shifted away from protocol code toward organizational security and operational infrastructure.

Attack Methods Continue to Evolve

The findings demonstrate that cybercriminals are employing increasingly sophisticated attack strategies across different blockchain ecosystems.

Ethereum continues to face threats centered on application-level vulnerabilities, including flaws in bridges, smart contracts and decentralized finance protocols.

Meanwhile, attackers targeting Solana have increasingly focused on compromising signing systems, operational security and access credentials rather than exploiting blockchain code directly.

The divergence illustrates how security priorities vary across blockchain networks depending on their architecture and ecosystem maturity.

Industry Focus Turns Toward Security

The continued rise in cryptocurrency theft underscores the importance of stronger cybersecurity practices across the blockchain industry.

As institutional participation, decentralized finance and tokenized assets continue expanding, security firms are encouraging developers and organizations to strengthen smart contract auditing, key management, access controls and operational safeguards.

The report also highlights that protecting infrastructure surrounding blockchain applications is becoming just as important as securing the underlying protocols themselves.

Outlook

Blockaid’s latest findings demonstrate that while blockchain technology continues to mature, cybersecurity remains one of the industry’s greatest challenges. Ethereum continues to attract attacks because of its concentration of high-value decentralized applications, while Solana’s rising losses highlight the growing importance of securing private keys and organizational infrastructure. As digital asset adoption accelerates globally, improving operational security, smart contract resilience and institutional risk management will remain essential for building greater confidence across the cryptocurrency ecosystem.
