Key Points:

  • Gemini co-founders Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss donated $10 million in Bitcoin to a political action committee supporting President Donald Trump.
  • The donation came weeks after the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) and Gemini jointly requested that a federal court reverse a previously agreed $5 million settlement.
  • The Winklevoss brothers have become some of the largest cryptocurrency industry supporters of Trump’s digital asset agenda through multiple political donations.
  • The case unfolds as Congress continues debating the Crypto CLARITY Act, legislation that could significantly expand the CFTC’s authority over digital assets.

Gemini Founders Make Major Bitcoin Political Contribution

Gemini co-founders Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss have contributed $10 million in Bitcoin to MAGA Inc., a super political action committee supporting President Donald Trump.

Federal Election Commission filings show the brothers each donated more than $5 million in Bitcoin through Gemini Trust Company on June 19.

The contribution represents one of the largest publicly disclosed cryptocurrency donations made to a political organization and further strengthens the Winklevoss brothers’ support for Trump’s cryptocurrency policies.

Super PACs are permitted to spend funds independently in support of political candidates, provided they do not coordinate directly with campaign organizations.

Donation Follows Joint CFTC Court Motion

The Bitcoin contribution occurred approximately three weeks after the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) and Gemini jointly asked a federal court to reverse a January 2025 settlement involving the cryptocurrency exchange.

The original settlement required Gemini to pay a $5 million civil penalty related to allegations that the company made false or misleading statements.

Current CFTC leadership has argued that the enforcement action reflected policies pursued under the previous administration and sought to reverse the settlement through a joint court filing with Gemini.

The court has not yet issued a decision on the request.

Political Scrutiny Continues

The timing of the donation has drawn attention from lawmakers monitoring the relationship between cryptocurrency companies and federal regulators.

Some policymakers have questioned whether the effort to reverse the settlement could create the appearance of political influence over financial regulation.

Critics have urged regulators to maintain independence when enforcing digital asset laws, while supporters argue that previous enforcement actions unfairly targeted cryptocurrency businesses.

The CFTC has stated that, even if the settlement is reversed, the original $5 million penalty would not be refunded to Gemini.

Winklevoss Brothers Expand Crypto Policy Support

The latest contribution adds to a series of political donations made by the Gemini founders in support of cryptocurrency-friendly policies.

During the 2024 election cycle, each brother contributed $1 million to Trump’s presidential campaign.

They have also supported digital asset initiatives promoted by the administration, including public backing for stablecoin legislation and investments in cryptocurrency-related ventures.

More recently, the brothers reportedly contributed $21 million in Bitcoin to another political action committee supporting digital asset policy initiatives.

CLARITY Act Raises CFTC’s Importance

The ongoing legal proceedings come as Congress considers the Crypto CLARITY Act, legislation that would establish a comprehensive regulatory framework for digital assets.

If enacted, the bill would significantly expand the CFTC’s role in supervising cryptocurrency markets, making the agency one of the primary federal regulators overseeing digital assets.

At present, the commission is operating with only one confirmed commissioner, while additional appointments have yet to be announced.

The agency’s future leadership could play a critical role in implementing any new cryptocurrency regulations approved by Congress.

Outlook

The Winklevoss brothers’ $10 million Bitcoin donation underscores the growing intersection of cryptocurrency, regulation and US politics. As lawmakers debate the Crypto CLARITY Act and federal agencies reshape their approach to digital asset oversight, political engagement by major industry figures is becoming increasingly visible. The pending court decision involving Gemini and the CFTC, together with ongoing legislative efforts, could influence both the regulatory landscape and the future relationship between the cryptocurrency industry and Washington.
