Key Points:

  • U.S.-listed spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded $643.3 million in net outflows on October 30, their largest single-day withdrawal since June 25.
  • The withdrawals eliminated approximately 63.6% of the funds’ year-to-date net inflows, leaving their cumulative 2026 inflows at only slightly above $1 billion.
  • BlackRock’s IBIT and Fidelity’s FBTC led the withdrawals, while a negative Coinbase premium and weakening market sentiment provided additional signs of reduced U.S. investor demand.

U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds experienced a significant reversal in investor flows on October 30, recording their largest single-day net outflow in more than four months. The withdrawals followed the $6.3 billion Binance security breach, highlighting how exchange-related security concerns can affect institutional sentiment and weaken demand for regulated cryptocurrency investment products.

ETF Withdrawals Erase Most of 2026’s Accumulated Inflows

According to data from SoSoValue, U.S.-listed spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded approximately $643.3 million in net outflows on Friday. This represented the largest daily withdrawal since June 25, when investors withdrew approximately $696.3 million. It was also the 12th-largest single-day outflow since these investment products began trading in January 2024.

Before Friday’s withdrawals, the funds had accumulated slightly more than $1 billion in net inflows during 2026. The latest outflow eliminated approximately 63.6% of those year-to-date gains, leaving institutional investment flows only marginally positive for the year.

The impact was also visible in total assets under management. According to Bitfire Research, spot Bitcoin ETF assets fell below the $100 billion threshold to approximately $98.14 billion. This development illustrates how quickly changes in investor positioning can affect the scale of capital allocated through regulated Bitcoin products.

BlackRock and Fidelity Lead the Withdrawals

The largest withdrawals came from two of the industry’s leading Bitcoin ETF providers. BlackRock’s IBIT recorded $233.7 million in outflows, while Fidelity’s FBTC experienced withdrawals of $201.4 million.

The concentration of withdrawals in these major funds is significant because both products provide traditional investors with exchange-traded exposure to Bitcoin without requiring direct ownership or private custody of the cryptocurrency. Their flow performance is therefore closely monitored as an indicator of demand from institutional and conventional financial-market participants.

The latest withdrawals also narrowly exceeded the $635.5 million outflow recorded on October 22. Although one trading session cannot establish a lasting reversal in institutional demand, the size of the movement suggests that investors were reassessing their exposure during a period of heightened market uncertainty.

Negative Coinbase Premium Signals Weakening U.S. Demand

ETF withdrawals were accompanied by weakness in another closely monitored market indicator: the Coinbase premium. Bitfire Research reported that the indicator remained negative, ranging between approximately 0.18% and 0.27% below zero. A negative premium can indicate weaker buying pressure on Coinbase relative to other trading venues, although it is not a standalone measure of institutional selling.

The Crypto Fear & Greed Index also softened into a range of approximately 30 to 34, reflecting cautious market sentiment. Bitfire Research additionally reported sustained weekly net outflows from spot Ethereum ETFs, suggesting that reduced demand was not limited to Bitcoin investment products.

Nick Forster, founder and CEO of Derive, attributed the Bitcoin ETF withdrawals partly to the Binance breach, describing the incident as an additional source of uncertainty in an already pressured market.

U.S. Economic and Political Events Could Shape the Next Phase

Investors now face several developments that could influence cryptocurrency market positioning. The November 3 U.S. midterm elections may affect expectations surrounding the regulatory environment, while the November 6 nonfarm payrolls report could influence Federal Reserve interest-rate expectations and broader risk appetite.

Another issue is MSCI’s review of index eligibility rules affecting companies whose primary business activities involve holding digital assets. Strategy and Metaplanet have been identified as potential candidates for exclusion, which could expose their shares to passive-fund selling pressure and indirectly affect their capacity to accumulate additional Bitcoin.

Looking ahead, the sustainability of ETF flows will be an important measure of institutional confidence. A return to consistent net inflows could indicate that investors are absorbing recent security concerns, while continued withdrawals would suggest more persistent caution. The relationship between ETF demand, Coinbase trading activity, regulatory developments and broader financial conditions will help determine whether Bitcoin’s narrow positive performance for 2026 can be maintained.
